HAMDEN, Conn. - In front of perhaps the largest crowd to ever witness a Bobcats Madness in Hamden, the Quinnipiac University basketball programs kicked off the 2013-14 season with a night of dunks, threes and excitement at the TD Bank Sports Center.
Quinnipiac students, families, friends and fans attended one of the most popular annual events at the University. The night began at 7 p.m. with the introduction of Quinnipiac's Spirit Groups - Ice Cats, Sideline Cheerleading, Ballroom Dancing, Step to Perfection, Dance Company, Dance Fusion, Kickline, SGA, Game Ops Staff, and the QU Spirit Group. After that, President John Lahey addressed the capacity crowd with some opening remarks, followed by Student Government Association President Matt Desilets who provided his fellow students and their parents with some brief words. This led right into the unveiling the new video board that showcased high-definition video for the first time in the arena's history.
Following the national anthem by the Quinnipiac Pep Band, the QU Spirit Group led the crowd with QU cheers and the QU Fight Song sing-a-long.
Senior associate athletic director Billy Mecca was then introduced before inviting all the Quinnipiac Summer Camp campers, counselors and Quinnipiac's student-athletes to the floor to dance with Mecca in what has emerged as a yearly tradition.
Quinnipiac's fall, winter and spring varsity teams were also recognized and introduced to the crowd before several performances from all of Quinnipiac's Spirit Groups.
After the 2013-14 men's and women's basketball teams were introduced, a series of contests were held to showcase this season's student-athletes. The contests included a CO-ED basketball shooting contest, a women's basketball 3-point shooting contest and a men's basketball dunk contest, which were all hosted by Billy Mecca.
For the second consecutive year, "Zooperstars" entertained the audience with two fun skits that had all laughing and smiling. They performed twice throughout the evening.
The night concluded with the "Grand Finale" as all of Quinnipiac's spirit groups and the men's and women's basketball teams performed together.
The men's basketball team's season opens at the Connecticut 6 Classic on Saturday, November 9 against Hartford. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard.
