HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac men’s hockey senior Eric Hartzell (White Bear Lake, Minn.) and women’s indoor track freshman Shameal Samuels (Hartford, Conn.) have been named Quinnipiac’s January Male and Female Athletes of the Month.

Senior Eric Hartzell - Men's Ice Hockey - Goalie - White Bear Lake, Minn.

For the month, Eric Hartzell was 4-0-1 for the month of January, with a 1.56 goals-against average and a .931 save percentage after stopping 108 of 116 shots on goal. He stopped 27 of 29 in a 3-2 win against Dartmouth and 21 of 23 in a 6-2 win of Harvard. He then went on to stop 24 of 25 in a 1-1 tie with Rensselaer before picking up a pair of wins against Union (W, 3-2; 15 saves) and UConn (W, 2-1; 21 saves). He was also the ECAC Hockey Goalie of the Week on Jan. 9, 2013.

For the year, Hartzell is currently 18-2-3 for a NCAA-leading .848 winning percentage, as well as a nation-leading win total. The 6-4 goalie also ranks 1st in goals-against average (1.48), 2nd in shutouts (4) and 10th in save percentage (.934). He was recently featured in Sports Illustrated's "Faces In The Crowd" and is a Hobey Baker Award nominee, as well as a two-time ECAC Hockey Goalie of the Week (Dec. 4, Jan. 9) winner.

Also nominated: Junior Ike Azotam (Boston, Mass.) – Men’s Basketball

Freshman Shameal Samuels - Women's Indoor Track - Hartford, Conn.

The first freshman winner of the Quinnipiac Athlete of the Month this year, male or female, Shameal Samuels helped spearhead the women’s indoor track team’s blistering start to the season. Through five meets, the Bobcats have combined to set 13 new program records in seven different events. Samuels burst onto the scene in Dec. with a record-setting day in the 400m as she crossed the line in 57.79 seconds at the Jay Carisella Invitational. Her time marked the first time Quinnipiac ever fielded a competitor who broke one minute in the 400m. Since then, Samuels had perhaps the most impressive run for the Bobcats of the season on Jan. 25 at the Terrier Invite. The freshman shattered her own previous school record with a time of 56.77 seconds in the 400m. Her finishing time was a full second faster than her mark from the team’s first meet of the season and it was good enough for 14th overall out of over 90 runners who competed in the event. After the blazing run, Samuels’ work for the day was not yet complete as she combined with three other Bobcats for a time of 3:56.40 in the 4 x 400m relay, the fourth program record to fall on the day at the Terrier Invite. Currently, Samuels holds three program records (400m, 200m, 4 x 400m), the most of any Quinnipiac runner this season with four more meets to go in the 2012-13 season.
