Junior Borja Angoitia and Senior Kelly Babstock Named November Athletes of the Month
HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac men’s soccer junior Borja Angoitia (Bilbao, Spain) and women’s ice hockey senior Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) were named Quinnipiac's November Athletes of the Month, announced on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013 by the QU Department of Athletics and Recreation.
Junior Goalkeeper Borja Angoitia – Men’s
Borja Angoitia completed one of the most historic campaigns in Quinnipiac men’s soccer history this past year. Almost more impressive though was Angoitia’s performance in the final month of competition. He posted three shutouts and a microscopic 0.56 goals against average over the team’s final six games. During the month, he had 30 saves and close to a .900 save percentage, which were tops in the MAAC. Due to his efforts between the posts, Quinnipiac claimed its first MAAC Championship in program history, and earned a first round NCAA Tournament clash with nationally-ranked No. 10, at the time, UConn in Storrs, Conn. In the MAAC Tournament, Angoitia made 11 saves and allowed just one goal, but really shined in both penalty shootouts. He scored on two penalty shots and saved two others, including the final shot from Monmouth to clinch the title.
Also Nominated: Zaid Hearst (Men’s Basketball); Sam Anas (Men’s Ice Hockey)
Senior Forward Kelly Babstock – Women’s
The nation’s point leader to date, Babstock had an explosion in November with 17 points (five goals, 12 assists) as she led the Bobcats to another winning month as they continue their most successful season in program history. She erupted for four points (one goal, three assists) against Colgate and just this past weekend ripped off five points (one goal, tied single-game program record four assists) against RIT in the First Round of the Nutmeg Classic. She went on to record two assists in a 3-2 win over Yale on Saturday to earn her MVP honors for the Nutmeg Classic for the second time in her career. Babstock recorded seven points (one goal, six assists) across the two-game tournament as she helped Quinnipiac capture their fourth Nutmeg Classic title and third in the last four years. A consistent key to the team’s success, the Bobcats were undefeated in every game Babstock scored a point this month (6-0-2).
