EDISON, N.J. – The Quinnipiac University men’s and women’s tennis teams swept the MAAC Weekly awards as freshman Kei Ezaka (Ojai, Calif.) and junior Ariana Launie (Milton, Mass.) were named Players of the Week for the week ending on March 16, 2014. Ezaka and Launie performed exceptionally well on the teams’ annual Spring Break trip to Florida.
Ariana Launie posted a perfect week for the Bobcats, finishing off a 4-0 overall record on the team’s trip to the Sunshine State. On Monday against South Dakota State, Launie collected the Bobcats’ lone singles win with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Tacy Haws-Lay at No. 6. Quinnipiac also captured the doubles point, where Launie again factored in as she paired with Kelsi Oliphant (Calgary, Alberta) to defeat Beatriz Souza and Flor Magni at No. 3 (8-4).
On Tuesday against Creighton, Launie battled back from a one-set deficit to defeat Sam Anderson at No. 5 singles, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 for Quinnipiac's third point of the match. She and Oliphant also remained perfect in doubles with an 8-4 win over Amanda Noonan and Liz Vermillion. Launie improved her career record to 70-60 at Quinnipiac.
On the men’s side, Kei Ezaka amassed a team-high three wins during Quinnipiac’s trip down south. On Monday against South Dakota State, Quinnipiac's lone win in singles came at No. 1 where Ezaka defeated SDSU’s ace Andrea Boglić in thrilling fashion. He battled back from a first set loss, 2-6, and earned a 7-5 victory in the second set and clinched the point with a 10-5 triumph in the tie-break. Ezaka also won in his doubles match, where he and Ryoma Haraguchi (New York, N.Y.) defeated Andrea Boglić and Lucas Pereira, 8-5, at No. 2.
Later in the week against Valparaiso, Ezaka and Haraguchi put forth a great match at No. 3 doubles, and claimed the upset. Ezaka and Haraguchi edged Eric Honert and Lucas Waak, 7-2, in the tie-break for the 8-7 triumph. Ezaka has a combined 28-12 record this season.
