Shameal Samuels, Women's Indoor Track

Bobcats' junior Shameal Samuels (Hartford, Connecticut) was named Quinnipiac's February Female Athlete of the Month.

Shameal Samuels – Women’s Indoor Track & Field – Junior – Hartford, Conn.

Shameal Samuels put together the most successful month in the history of the Quinnipiac women’s indoor track and field program. She started the month with the victory in the 400m at the prestigious Valentine Invitational which attracts powerhouse track and field programs including Florida State, Georgetown, Boston College and UConn. Samuels became the first Bobcat in program history to take down an individual championship at the Valentine Invitational, besting a loaded field of 152 competitors. Her success continued at the MAAC Championships where she swept all three sprint events (60m, 200m, 400m) to earn the 2015 MAAC Most Outstanding Women’s Track Performer. She earned the highest individual honor at the MAAC Championships, becoming the first Bobcat to take home Most Outstanding Track Performer honors. Samuels stole the show with a QU record 7.653 seconds in the 60m dash, besting second place by .005 seconds. She won the 200m title with a time of 24.30 seconds, matching the MAAC record while besting second place by an incredible 1.65 seconds.

Finally, Samuels cruised to her second straight 400m MAAC Championship with a time of 54.82 seconds. Her outstanding individual results also helped catapult Quinnipiac into a 3rd place finish at the MAAC Championships which ties a program record while the 104 team points sets a new program-best at the conference championship meet. Perhaps the crowning achievement came at the end of the month where Samuels torched the track, breaking a 27-year-old meet record to claim her second straight New England 400m Championship. Her time of 57.72 seconds at the New England Championships breaks the meet record previously held by Boston University’s Mirian Knijin (53.81 seconds) from the 1988 New England Championships.

Other Nominees: Val Driscoll (Women’s Basketball); Chelsea Laden (Women’s Ice Hockey); Molly Jarrett (Softball)
