Quinnipiac sophomore Shameal Samuels (Hartford, Conn.) was named the Quinnipiac Athlete of the Month for February.
Shameal Samuels | Sophomore | Hartford, Conn.
Sophomore sprinter Shameal Samuels won her second career Quinnipiac Female Athlete of the Month after putting together the most impressive month of any individual Bobcat the program has ever seen.
For the month, Samuels had record-breaking runs in five out of the nine total appearances including two individual victories. She started the month with a victory and school record in the 300m dash at the Harvard Invitational, setting the program record with a time of 39.68 seconds. Samuels also became Quinnipiac’s first individual champion with a 1st place finish and program record in the 400m at the MAAC Championships. She later became the first Bobcat to run the 200m with a sub-25 second time as she picked up a 4th place finish, crossing the line in 24.83 at the MAAC Championship event. Samuels wrapped up her spectacular run through the MAAC Championships by combining with three other Bobcats to land her team in 2nd in the 4x400m relay. For the day, Samuels accounted for a team-high 23 points which also represented 37.1 percent of the Bobcats’ total point output of 62 for the Championships.
Finally, Samuels’ continued her torrid stretch in day one of the New England Championships as she ran a 55.08 second 400m dash in the preliminary. Seeded No. 1 overall, Samuels backed it up by placing .47 seconds ahead of the next-fastest competitor and her time is also good enough for a Top 10 spot amongst every sophomore in the nation competing in the 400m dash. Her success in the 400m carried into the distance medley relay at the New Englands as she helped break the school record by over 12 seconds with a time of 11:46.92 to help the Bobcats finish 5th overall in New England out of 22 teams.
