Zak Palmer and Morgan Roche Named Quinnipiac's May Athletes of the Month
HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac baseball sophomore Zak Palmer (Mahwah, N.J.) and outdoor track senior Morgan Roche (Clifton Park, N.Y.) have been named Quinnipiac’s May Athletes of the Month, as announced by the Department of Athletics and Recreation on May 16, 2012.
Palmer was named the Northeast Conference player of the week on
May 8, 2012 after leading Quinnipiac with a .714 (10-14) batting
average in the Bobcats’ four-game series against LIU
Brooklyn, which were also Quinnipiac’s only games for the
month. Palmer’s second weekly honor from the conference came
after he tallied a double, home run, seven RBI and three runs
scored. On Saturday, May 6, Palmer was 3-for-6 in the first
doubleheader of the two-day series. Over the final three games of
the series, Palmer recorded a base hit in eight straight at-bats,
while on the second day alone, Palmer was 7-for-8, recording a hit
in his first seven at-bats of the afternoon. In the first game of
Sunday's doubleheader, a 13-4 win for Quinnipiac, Palmer was
3-for-3 with a RBI double and a two-run home run while also scoring
three runs. In the second game of the doubleheader, he was 4-for-5
with three RBI. Palmer finished the year batting .342 (54-158)
while leading the team in hits and tied for the team lead with 22
RBI. Against the NEC, Palmer batted .417 (45-108) with 20 RBI and
21 runs scored.
Roche captured the Northeast Conference title in the 3,000-meter
steeplechase at the 2012 NEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships
on May 6. On the previous day, Roche was one of four Bobcats to
lead Quinnipiac to a third-place finish in the 4x800-meter relay at
the 2012 NEC Outdoor Championships on May 5. Together, the group
posted a time of 9:19.71. She then went on to set a new program
record with a time of 10:56.01 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase,
good for a 13th-place finish at the ECAC Championships
on May 11.
