GREENVILLE, S.C. Joe Poletsky (Riverside, Conn.) went 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBI as the Quinnipiac University baseball team concluded its southern trip with a 7-5 win against Xavier, Saturday afternoon at Fluor Field. Bryn Doyle (Manchester, N.H.) and Brian Monack (Branford, Conn.) also contributed 2-for-4 efforts as the Bobcats improved to 2-10. The loss dropped Xavier to 6-6.
Mike Oskandy (Bethel, Conn.) hurled eight strong innings to earn the win, scattering seven hits and four walks while allowing just two earned runs. Gabe Guerino (Milford, Conn.) scored two runs for the Bobcats.
Xavier's Steve Brown tripled with one out in the top of the first and scored on a Zac Richard groundout to give the Musketeers their only lead of the game. Quinnipiac immediately responded in the top of the second with three runs. Monack bunt singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a throwing error. After Doyle singled to put runners on first and third, Xavier starter Danny Rosenbaum balked to bring in Monack.
Later in the inning, with runners on first and second, Poletsky's two-out single scored two more. Poletsky was credited with one RBI, as the second run scored on a fielding error by the left fielder.
A double, an error, and a balk allowed the Musketeers to cut the deficit to one, 3-2, in the fourth. But Quinnipiac got the run back in the sixth. A Doyle single followed by walks issued to Mike Marmo (Brookville, N.Y.) and Guerino loaded the bases with one out. Brian Muransky replaced Rosenbaum and immediately plunked Anes Koummal (Stamford, Conn.) to score Doyle, running the Quinnipiac advantage to 4-2. But Muransky rebounded with a pair of strikeouts to limit the damage.
Poletsky again came through with two outs, this time lacing a two-run triple to right in the eighth to run the Bobcats' lead to 6-2. Xavier got one run back in the bottom half of the eighth. Billy O'Connor tripled with one out and Ben Thomas followed with a pinch-hit single to cut the Bobcats' lead to 6-3.
Chris Migani (Orange, Conn.) helped the Bobcats add an insurance run in the ninth, singling, moving to second on a wild pitch, and scoring on a Monack single. The Musketeers managed two runs off Quinnipiac relief pitcher Joe Duffy (Commack, N.Y.) in the bottom of the ninth and brought the tying run to the plate. But the senior hurler shut the door, getting Adam Pasono to fly out.
The Bobcats return to action Thursday, when they face intrastate foe Fairfield. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Fairfield, Conn.
