Baseball's Andy Mayer Named Akadema/Northeast Conference Pitcher Of The Week

HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac University senior Andy Mayer (Trumbull, Conn.) was named the Akadema /Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Week. Mayer threw the only shutout in 15 Northeast Conference-wide games this weekend. Mayer's 21st career victory also matched Quinnipiac all-time record for career wins, previously held by Tom Signore '85.

Mayer accomplished what no other pitcher has done against Monmouth this season, spanning 47 games. It was the first time this season that the Hawks, the NEC's top-scoring team at 8.8 runs per game, were held scoreless.

Agianst Monmouth, Mayer scattered five hits and issued only one free pass over 7.0 innings. The crafty right-handed hurler struck out a career-high 11 hitters on his way to tying Signore for the all-time lead in wins. Mayer, the Bobcats' second Akadema/Pitcher of the Week honoree this season (Chris Gloor - Apr. 27), became the first pitcher in the program's Division I history to win 20 career games earlier this season.

Mayer has enjoyed a historically great career at Quinnipiac, and possibly the best ever at the Division I level. As a freshman, he posted six wins with a 4.01 earned-run average over 72 1/3 innings pitched. His sophomore year may have been his most successful as he led Quinnipiac on the hill with a 8-2 record with a 3.20 earned-run average as Quinnipiac captured the NEC Regular-Season Championship and were ranked first in all of New England. That season, he was named a New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association All-New England Division I All-Star, pitching at Fenway Park in Boston, Mass. in the annual game.

For his career, Mayer has posted a 21-12 record, with 163 strikeouts in 279 2/3 innings pitched. Off the field, he has been a leader with the Quinnipiac Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, serving as the committee's chair this academic year. In that capacity, Mayer has organized trips by the Quinnipiac baseball team to St. Ann's Soup Kitcher, on Dixwell Avenue in Hamden, Conn., and also to the Connecticut Children's Medical Center in Hartford, Conn.

Quinnipiac will travel to the University of Massachusetts on Tuesday, May 12 to take on the Minutemen in a non-conference match-up set for 3 p.m. Quinnipiac will close out its 2009 season this weekend when it faces Northeast Conference foe Long Island University, in a four-game series set for Thursday, May 14 through Saturday, May 16. The Bobcats and Blackbirds play a nine-inning game on Thursday at 3 p.m., followed by a pair of seven-inning games on Friday at 12 p.m. and a nine-inning game on Saturday, also at 12 p.m.
