RALEIGH, N.C. - The Quinnipiac University baseball team lost their season-opener, 17-6, to North Carolina State University at Doak Field in Raleigh, N.C. The loss in their first game puts the Bobcats at 0-1 to start the season while NC State improves to 8-1 on the season.
Waterford, Conn. natives Ben Farina and Mickey Amanti led the Quinnipiac offense, as Farina was 2-for-3 with an RBI while Amanti collected a team-high three hits while also driving in a run. Joe Poletsky (Riverside, Conn.) had a pair of hits while Brian Monack (Branford, Conn.) homered in his first at-bat of the year.
On the mound, Mike Oskandy (Bethel, Conn.) took the loss after allowing 12 runs, seven earned, on nine hits over 2 2/3. Freshman Derek Lamacchia (Whitestone, N.Y.) came on in relief, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits over 1 1/3. Freshman Spencer Kane (Wolcott, Conn.) gave up two runs on two hits in two innings of relief while Alex Russow (Milford, Conn.) was hit for a run while scattering four hits over the final two innings of play.
The Bobcats jumped on the board early, plating two runs in the top of the 1st inning to take a 2-0 lead after a half-inning of play. Farina collected the first hit of the year for Quinnipiac, slapping a single by the Wolfpack's shortstop for a single. Monack, who led the Bobcats in most power numbers a year ago, blasted a 1-and-1 offering from NC State's Ethan Ogburn over the right field fence for a two-run homerun in his first at-bat of the season.
It was mostly downhill for Quinnipiac after the top of the first as NC State scored 14 unanswered runs over the next four innings of play. The Wolfpuck pulled within a run in the bottom of the first before score five runs in the 2nd inning and seven runs in the 3rd.
In the top of the 4th, Quinnipiac managed to put together a rally, stinging NC State for four runs. Poletsky started the rally with a single to right field on the first pitch of the inning. Gabe Guerino (Milford, Conn.) then singled to left center before Chris Migani's (Orange, Conn.) single through the left side of the infield score Poletsky.
Jeff Carino (Guilford, Conn.) was hit by a pitch, loading the bases before NC State recorded an out in the inning. Mickey Amanti (Waterford, Conn.) then collected his second hit of the day, driving home Guerino with a single to left field. Kyle Nisson (Wallingford, Conn.) continued the Bobcats' hit-parade with a line drive to right field to score Migani. Farina's sacrifice fly to center field scored Carino for the Bobcats' fourth and final run.
Quinnipiac will play their second of three games against North Carolina State on Saturday, March 6 at 2 p.m.
