The Quinnipiac University baseball team defeated Ball State, 5-4, at Coastal Carolina's Caravelle Resort Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Kyle Nisson (Wallingford, Conn.) was 4-for-4 with a pair of RBI's while George Dummar (Branford, Conn.) picked up the win after pitching five innings of four-hit ball while allowing three unearned runs. Ball State drops to 1-8 on the season.
Ben Farina (Waterford, Conn.) was 2-for-4 with a RBI and run scored while Chris Migani (Orange, Conn.) and Mike Bartlett (Milford, Conn.) also drove in a run. Freshman Mike Blumenthal (Dix Hills, N.Y.) scored twice. Freshmen Nick Fabrizio (Peabody, Mass.) and Ryan Walsh (Stamford, Conn.) pitched the final four innings in relief. Fabrizio gave up a run on two hits over three innings pitched while Walsh pitched a perfect 9th inning, striking out two, to pick up his first career save.
Quinnipiac took a 1-0 lead when Migani singled home Farina, who reached on an error, with an unearned run. Ball State responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a two-run lead, 3-1.
In the 5th, Quinnipiac exploded for four runs when Blumenthal singled through the right side of the infield and moved to second with a stolen base. After Amanti struck out for the second out of the inning, Farina singled to center field to score Blumenthal and move the Bobcats on the run. With Farina moving to second on the throw to the plate, Migani walked to put two runners on. Joe Poletsky (Riverside, Conn.) reached on a field error to load the bases before Nisson singled to right center to score Migani and Farini and give Quinnipiac a 4-3 lead. Bartlett's single to right field brought Poletsky around to give Quinnipiac a 5-3 lead.
Quinnipiac is back in action next weekend when they travel to Richmond, Va. to take on Richmond University in a three-game set from March 11 through 13.
