The Quinnipiac University baseball team was backed by a strong outing from junior starting pitcher Derek Lamacchia (Whitestone, N.Y.), but fell to Richmond, 3-0, in the first of a three-game series at Pitt Field in Richmond, Va., on Friday afternoon. In the defeat, the Bobcats fall to 1-4 on the season. With the win, the Spiders improve to 10-3.
The Bobcats fell behind in the fourth inning on a solo home run by the Spiders' Chris Cowell. Richmond added a run in the fifth on an Adam McConnell sacrifice fly, and another in the eighth on an Adam Forrer RBI double. Prior to the Cowell home run, Lamacchia had held the Spiders hitless through the first 3 2/3 innings.
Lamacchia pitched the first seven innings for the Bobcats, surrendering two runs (one earned) on six hits and three walks, while striking out five. In the loss, he falls to 0-1 on the season. Junior Kevin Castodio (Pawcatuck, Conn.) pitched the eighth inning in relief of Lamacchia.
Jacob Meyers pitched the first eight innings for Richmond, holding the Bobcats to two hits and two walks, while striking out nine. He improves to 3-1 on the season with the win. Andrew Brockett pitched the ninth inning in relief for the Spiders.
Quinnipiac tallied three hits in the game, including two from senior Kyle Nisson (Wallingford, Conn.), who singled and doubled for the Bobcats. Freshman Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Conn.) recorded the other hit.
The Bobcats return to action on Saturday, Mar. 10, for the second of a three-game against Richmond at Pitt Field in Richmond, Va. Saturday's first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
