Baseball Signs Three Student-Athletes To National Letters of Intent For 2012-13

HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac head baseball coach Dan Gooley has announced the signing of Ryan Nelson (Knoxville, Tenn.), Justin Thomas (Enfield, Conn.) and Steffen Herter (Amherst, Mass.) to National Letters of Intent to join the Bobcats for the 2012-13 season.

"I am extremely pleased and excited to have three outstanding student-athletes joining our family at Quinnipiac University," Gooley said.

Thomas is the latest of a number of in-state student-athletes to join the Bobcats as he comes from Enfield (Conn.) High School. Last season, Thomas was an All-State Selection and Hartford Courant Fab 15 after posting a 7-4 record with a 1.27 ERA. Thomas, a 6-0, 185 lbs. left-handed pitcher, recorded 99 strikeouts in 64 innings pitched. He also batted a gawdy .480 while blasting six homeruns and driving in 25 runs.

Nelson comes to Quinnipiac from Knoxville (Tenn.) Catholic High School where he was an All-Area honor last season. Nelson, a pitcher and shortstop at Knoxville Catholic, will be a middle infielder for the Bobcats upon his arrival. As a junior at Knoxville Catholic, the 5-11, 190 lbs. Nelson batted .348 with a homerun while playing third base for the Fighting Irish. On the mound, Nelson was 4-2 with three saves, while also striking out 36 batters in 38 innings pitched and posting a 3.00 earned-run average.

Herter joins Quinnipiac from Amherst (Mass.)Regional High School, where he was a Massachusetts All-State selection. He will play this year at the Salisbury School in Salisbury, Conn. As a senior at Amherst, the catcher/outfielder led the Hurricanes in batting average (.476), slugging (.683), hits (30), runs (24), triples (three), total bases (43), and stolen bases (26).
