Quinnipiac freshman Steffen Herter (Amherst, Mass.) has been named the Northeast Conference Baseball Rookie of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday, Mar. 4, 2013.
Herter had a break-out weekend, helping the Bobcats to a three-game, season-opening sweep of George Washington in Arlington, Va. Herter batted .400 (4-10) with two RBI, one run scored and four stolen bases. Despite and 0-for-3 debut in his first career game on Friday, Mar. 1, Herter drew a walk and managed to score a run in the Bobcats' 8-3 season-opening win. The next day, Herter was 3-for-4 with a RBI and two stolen bases. In the final game of the weekend, Herter singled and stole a base in the seventh inning of the series finale before delivering in the deciding ninth frame. Herter's RBI sac fly capped a three-run ninth for Quinnipiac, which trailed 2-1 after eight, and plated what held up as the game-winning run.
Herter is the ninth player in Quinnipiac's Northeast Conference history to earn the first-year player honor from the conference. The last player to earn the award was sophomore Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Conn.) on May 1, 2012.
