Quinnipiac baseball opens its 2013 Spring trip on Saturday, Mar. 10 against the University of Richmond at Pitt Field in Richmond, Va. The Bobcats will play a single, nine-inning game on Saturday at 1 p.m. followed by a doubleheader, consisting of a pair of nine-inning games, on Sunday, Mar. 11 at 11 a.m.

Following its three-game set against Richmond, the Bobcats travel to Raleigh, N.C. on Tuesday, Mar. 12 to face nationally-ranked No. 8 North Carolina State. The Bobcats will then face Duke on Wednesday, Mar. 13 at Bull Durham Stadium in Durham, N.C. Richmond will host Quinnipiac with a record of 10-2 on the season, including wins in five straight games. Bret Williams leads the Spiders in average (.444), hits (20), doubles (5), RBI (14) and slugging percentage (.556). Tanner Stanley is hitting .341 (14-41) with a team-high 15 runs scored to go along with a home run and 11 RBI. Jacob Mayers checks in with a .298 (14-47) average with a home run 10 RBI and 14 runs scored. Nick Poulos is also hitting .444 (16-36) with a team-best .474 on-base percentage. Matt Zink has stolen a team-high six bases so far this year. RHP Jonathan de Marte (3-0, 4.20 ERA, 15 IP, 14 K's) will start Saturday's game, while Zak Sterling (LHP, 2-1, 2.87 ERA, 13 K's 15.2 IP) will start the first game of Sunday's doubleheader. Andrew Blum (RHP, 2-0, 3.38 ERA, 17 K's, 18.2 IP) will start the final game of the series.
Steffen Herter Named NEC Baseball Rookie of the Week
Quinnipiac freshman Steffen Herter (Amherst, Mass.) was named the Northeast Conference Baseball Rookie of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday, Mar. 4, 2013.
The Hert(er) Locker
Herter had a break-out weekend, helping the Bobcats to a three-game, season-opening sweep of George Washington in Arlington, Va. Herter batted .400 (4-10) with two RBI, one run scored and four stolen bases. Despite and 0-for-3 debut in his first career game on Friday, Mar. 1, Herter drew a walk and managed to score a run in the Bobcats' 8-3 season-opening win. The next day, Herter was 3-for-4 with a RBI and two stolen bases. In the final game of the weekend, Herter singled and stole a base in the seventh inning of the series finale before delivering in the deciding ninth frame. Herter's RBI sac fly capped a three-run ninth for Quinnipiac, which trailed 2-1 after eight, and plated what held up as the game-winning run.
Bobcats and the NEC Rookie of the Week Award
Herter is the ninth player in Quinnipiac's Northeast Conference history to earn the first-year player honor from the conference. The last player to earn the award was sophomore Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Conn.) on May 1, 2012.

Vincent Guglietti Named CollegeSportsMadness.com's NEC Baseball Player of the Week
Quinnipiac sophomore Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Conn.) was selected as CollegSportsMadness.com's Northeast Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the website on Tuesday, Mar. 5, 2013.
Last weekend against George Washington, Guglietti led Quinnipiac in average (.462), slugging % (.615), on-base percentage (.462), hits (6), doubles (2)and was one of six Bobcats to drive in two runs...With a team-best three-game hitting streak to open the year, Guglietti was 4-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored in the Bobcats' season-opening 8-3 win against George Washington. He followed with a 1-for-4 day with an RBI in a 4-2 win in Game 2 of the series while wrapping up the Bobcats' sweep of the Colonials with a 1-for-4 day with a double in a 4-3 win.
