Baseball Splits Doubleheader At Richmond; Lose First Game, 5-4 in 10 Inn., Win Second Game, 5-2
The Quinnipiac University baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader against Richmond, dropping the first game, 5-4 in 10 innings, before taking the second game, 5-2, in seven innings. Quinnipiac goes to 4-2 overall while Richmond now stands at 12-3 on the year.
In the first game, Quinnipiac's Zak Palmer
(Mahwah, N.J. ) was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored while Scott Donaghue
(Marlboro, N.J.) also had three hits. Mike Blumenthal
(Dix Hills, N.Y.) was 2-for-5 with two RBI. On the mound, Spencer Kane
(Wolcott, COnn.) took the no-decision after giving up three runs on seven hits over eight strong innings. Matthew Siciliano
(Ardmore, Pa.) took the loss after giving up two hits in 1 2/3 innings pitched.

(Orange, Conn.) and Vincent Guglietti
(East Haven, Conn.) strung together a pair of two-out hits, Palmer singled to center field to drive both runs in and give Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead. Quinnipiac took a 3-0 lead when Blumenthal dropped down a bunt on a squeeze play to score Palmer and give the Bobcats a three-run cushion.
In the bottom half of the inning, Richmond's Jacob Mayers got the Spiders on the board with a lead-off home run to cut Quinnipiac's lead to two runs, 3-1. In the bottom of the 8th, Richmond tied the game when Mayers drove in a run, followed by a run-scoring single by Chris Bell to tie the game at 3-3.
In the top of the 10th, Palmer walked with one out before moving to third on a single by Donaghue. Blumenthal then hit a ground ball to third that put Donaghue out a second before he beat the throw on the back-end of the double play as Palmer snuck home to give Quinnipiac a 4-3 lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, Tanner Stanley, Mayers and Nick Poulos all reached base safely to start the inning. Adam Forer then hit a sacrifice fly ball that scored Stanley to tie the game before Bell hit a fly ball to center that scored Mayers with the game-winning run.
In the second game, Guglietti was 3-for-4 with a RBI and run scored while Migani was 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored. Donaghue picked up another two hits while freshman Ryan Nelson
(Knoxville, Tenn.) had two RBI. Nick Fabrizio
(Peabody, Mass.) improved to 2-0 after giving up two runs on six hits over five innings. Freshman Gary Binkiewicz
(Scotch Plains, N.J.) pitched the final two innings, holding Richmond hitless and scoreless for the save.
In the first inning in the second half of the Bobcats' twin-bill, Migani singled with two outs, followed by a base hit by Guglietti before Donaghue singled through the left side of the infield to score Migani and give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead. The Bobcats plated another run in the third when Guglietti singled home Ruditys to give Quinnipiac a two-run lead before Nelson drove in Gugliettiand Migani in the fifth to give Quinnipiac a 4-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Quinnipiac starter Fabrizio was cruising, holding Richmond scoreless through five innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Fabbrizo walked Bell to start the inning before Tyler Beckwith singled down the left field line to move Bell to second base. Matt Zink then doubled to left-center field, scoring Bell, and give Richmond its first run, 4-1. Stanley then flew out to center field to score Beckwith as Richmond pulled within two runs, 4-2.
In the seventh, after Migani reached on an error and moved to second on a single by Donaghue, freshman Mike Palladino
(Rockville Centre, N.Y.) drove Migani in with a single through the right side of the infield to give Quinnipiac a 5-2 lead.
The Bobcats travel to Raleigh, N.C. on Tuesday, Mar. 12 to face nationally-ranked No. 8 North Carolina State. The Bobcats will then face Duke on Wednesday, Mar. 13 at Bull Durham Stadium in Durham, N.C. They wrap-up their trip against Akron on Mar. 15-16 at Coastal Carolina's Vrooman Field at Watson Stadium in Conway, S.C.
