HAMDEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac senior Chris Migani (Orange, Conn.) was 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Bobcats to a 4-1 win against Sacred Heart at QU Baseball Field. The Bobcats improve to 5-4 in NEC play and 10-12 overall while Sacred Heart drops to 9-13 overall and 5-4 in league play.
Derek Lamacchia (White Stone, N.Y.) went the distance for the Bobcats on the mound to improve to 3-3 for the year. Lamacchia held Sacred Heart to one run on seven hits while striking out seven in the complete game win. Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and Steffen Herter (Amherst, N.Y.) both had a hit and a run scored while Nic Civale (East Windsor, Conn.) drove in a run.
Sacred Heart took an early lead in the second inning when Brian Lanboy drew a walk followed by a run-scoring double by Derick Horn to give Sacred Heart a 1-0 lead. Lamacchia retired the final batter of the inning, and the next four he faced before Sacred Heart threatened again in the fourth. Lamacchia pitched out of jam when the Pioneers had runners at second and third.
In the fifth, Migani led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a ground ball to second base by Scott Donaghue (Marlboro, N.J.). Civale's fly ball to center scored Migani to tie the game, 1-1. In the sixth, Palladino doubled to the right field fence to start the inning moving to third on a single by Herter . After Brian Ruditys (Boothwyn, Pa.) struck out, Mike Blumenthal (Dix Hills, N.Y.) walked to load the bases.
Migani then delivered a single through the right side of the infield to score Palladino and Herter to give Quinnipiac a two-run lead. On Migani's steal of second base, the Pioneers' shortstop misplayed the throw down to the bag, allowing Blumenthal to sneak home and give Quinnipiac a 4-1 lead.
In the eighth, Sacred Heart loaded the bases with no outs before Lamacchia struck out senior Dave Boisture for the first out of the inning. Lamacchia then got Brian Lamboy to hit into a double play to end the inning.
Quinnipiac and Sacred Heart will resume their series on Saturday, Apr. 6 with a pair of seven inning games, with the first pitch for the first game set for 1 p.m.
