Kevin Castodio (Pawcatuck, Conn.) took the loss for the Bobcats to drop to 0-3 for the year. Castodio gave up eight runs over 5 2/3 innings. The Bobcats starter was tagged for a runs in the first and second inning before CCSU pushed across three runs in the third. From there, Castodio settled in, retiring the next nine batters he faced. In the sixth, a three-run homer by Dylan Delacruz ended Castodio's day.
CCSU's Delacruz had a big afternoon, going 4-for-6 with three doubles and a home run while driving in six runs and scoring three more. JP Sportman and Josh Ingham both drove in three runs apiece for Central Connecticut. Cody Brown improved to 5-5 after blanking Quinnipiac over eight innings, while scattering four hits and striking out six.
For the Bobcats, Tom Donovan (Marshfield, Mass.) was 2-for-4 while Ryan Nelson (Knoxville, Tenn.) drove in two runs with a ninth-inning double.
Quinnipiac scored its first runs in the bottom of the ninth when CCSU reliever Michael Pastore walked the bases loaded for freshman Ryan Nelson (Knoxville, Tenn.). Nelson drove a 3-and-1 offering from Pastore to the right-center field gap to score Chris Migani (Orange, Conn.) and Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Conn.) with a two-run double. A wild pitch allowed Scott Donaghue (Marlboro, N.J.) to sneak home as Quinnipiac trimmed CCSU's lead to 17-3. After another wild pitch by Pastore moved Nelson to third, pinch-hitter Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) hit a ground ball to short that scored Nelson as Quinnipiac made the score 17-4.
Quinnipiac and Central Connecticut State will resume their NEC series on Friday, May 10 at 1 p.m. with a pair of seven-inning games at the Quinnipiac Baseball Field in Hamden, Conn.
