Baseball Splits NEC Doubleheader Against CCSU
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac baseball team split a Northeast Conference doubleheader with Central Connecticut State University, winning the first game, 11-4, before losing the second game, 8-2. Quinnipiac goes to 14-33 overall including a 9-18 record in NEC play. Central Connecticut State moves to 23-24 overall and 12-15 in the NEC.
In the first game, Scott Donaghue (Marlboro, N.J.) became the first Quinnipiac player to drive in seven runs in a game since Jeff Mainetti had seven RBI's against Fairleigh Dickinson on Mar. 26, 2013. Donaghue hit a three-run double in the fifth and then followed with a grand slam in the sixth. Quinnipiac freshman Rob Pescitelli (Bayshore, N.Y.) hit his third home run in his last four games when he and Donaghue went back-to-back in the sixth. The Bobcats plated five runs in the fifth and sixth innings to overcome a 4-1 deficit as they came from behind to tip CCSU.
Quinnipiac starter Spencer Kane (Wolcott, Conn.) found himself in trouble early when three Quinnipiac errors in the game's first three innings equated to three unearned runs for CCSU. In the fourth, Kane walked his first batter of the day to start the inning, which resulted in a run for the Blue Devils. From there, Kane was dominate allowing four of the final Blue Devils to come to the plate to reach base on his way to his fourth win of the year. CCSU's Nick Neumann took the loss to drop to 4-5 on the year after giving up five runs on seven hits over 4 1/3.
Brian Ruditys (Boothwyn, Pa.) was 3-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored while Mike Blumenthal (Dix Hills, N.Y.) drove in two runs. Forrest Dwyer (Wakefield, R.I.) was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Pescitelli had two hits on the day while Donaghue increased his team RBI-lead to 33 on the year.
In the second game, CCSU's Dylan Delacruz hit the second pitch of the game over the left field wall and the Blue Devils never trailed from that point. Delacruz also homered in the sixth as part of a 3-for-4 game. Mike Washburn also homered for the Blue Devils, as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI in the first game of the doubleheader before going 3-for-4 with two RBI in the second half of the twin bill. Chris Renzoni was also 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI in the second game. CCSU's Jack Greenhouse improved to 5-1 after holding Quinnipiac to two runs - one of which was unearned - on four hits over six innings.
For Quinnipiac, Nick Fabrizio (Peabody, Mass.) took the loss to drop to 3-6 on the year after giving up six runs on nine hits over five innings. Mike Palladino (Rockville Center, N.Y.) and Steffen Herter (Amherst, Mass.) both drove in runs for the Bobcats.
