NORFOLK, Va.- The Quinnipiac University baseball team was defeated by Villanova, 9-3, in a non-conference game at the Spartan Classic at Marty L. Miller Stadium in Norfold, Va. This marks the first game of the season for the Quinnipiac (0-1) while the Wildcats pick up their first win of the year (1-3).
Quinnipiac freshman starting pitcher Thomas Jankins (West Brookfield, Mass.) made his first collegiate start and gutted out four innings on the hill. He surrendered five runs on eight hits, while striking out two batters. In relief, senior Nick Fabrizio (Peabody, Mass) gave the Bobcats another two and two-thirds innings of mound-work, surrendering four runs on six hits while striking out one batter before turning the ball over to another newcomer. Freshman Matthew Osieja (Wyckoff, N.J) pitched the last inning and one-third for the Bobcats, giving up just one hit while striking out two.
Quinnipiac freshman catcher Matthew Oestreicher (North Haven, Conn.) got the first hit of his collegiate career in the fifth inning with a single down the third base line. Junior Brian Ruditys (Boothwyn, Pa.) followed with a walk. After sophomore Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) was called out swinging on a check swing, it was second baseman Matthew Batten's (Shelton, Conn.) turn at the plate. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch before Batten drove in two runs with a double over the head of Wildcat centerfielder Conor Jones (Chandler, Ariz.). They were also Batten's first two RBI of his Quinnipiac career, and pulled Quinnipiac within three runs at 5-2.
Quinnipiac's freshman battery of Oestreicher and Jankins showcased their defensive prowess with Oestricher throwing out a base runner on an attempted steal of second while Jankins picked off two batters.
The Bobcats added another run in the top of the eighth inning when Rob Pescitelli (West Islip, N.Y.) drove in Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Conn.) with a triple to finalize the scoring at 9-3.
For the Wildcats, Jones had two hits and drew two walks in five at bats. Both First Baseman Max Beerman (Tampa, Fla.) and Shortstop Eric Lowe (Arlington Heights, Ill.) drove in two runs helping to lead the offensive output. Starting Pitcher Max Almonte (Long Beach, N.Y.) gave the Wildcats six solid innings only surrendering two runs despite walking four and giving up five hits. He also added two strikeouts of his own.
The Quinnipiac Bobcats return to the field this evening at 7pm when they take on the Norfolk State University Spartans (0-3) at the Spartan Classic in Norfolk, Va.
