KNOXVILLE, Tenn- The Quinnipiac University baseball team wrapped-up its three-game series against nationally-ranked No. 28 University of Tennessee with a 9-4 loss to the Volunteers. Quinnipiac drops to 0-6 on the season while Tennessee opens the year with its 10th straight win.
Quinnipiac sophomore Rob Pescitelli (West Islip, N.Y.) led the way offensively for the Bobcats going 1-for-2 with his first homer of the season while driving in a run and walking twice. Junior Scott Donaghue (Marlboro, N.J.) got Quinnipiac on the board in the top of the 4th when he doubled down the left field line to score junior Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Conn) to cut the deficit to 7-1.
The Bobcats tacked on two runs in the top of the 7th on a single from junior Brian Ruditys (Boothwyn, PA) to score senior Nic Civale (East Windsor, Conn). Quinnipiac's second run of the inning came on a fielder's choice by freshman Matthew Batten (Shelton, Conn) to score senior Mike Blumenthal (Dix Hills, N.Y.) to make it an 8-3 game.
Sophomore Rob Pescitelli led off the 9th by blasting a ball over the left field wall for a solo homer to cut Tennessee's lead to 9-4. The Bobcats were unable to put any more runs on the board in their final at-bats.
Sophomore pitcher Joseph Scaglione (Wyckoff, N.J.) fell to 0-2 on the season after giving up six runs on six hits over two innings of work. Freshman Matthew Osieja (Wyckoff, N.J.) gave the Bobcats four very solid innings in relief, holding Tennessee to one run while scattering four hits and striking out two. Freshman Brandon Shileikis (North Dighton, Mass) finished off the game for Quinnipiac tossing two innings allowing one run on two hits.
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Mar. 7-9 when it travels to Richmond, Virg. to take on the University of Richmond in a three-game series at Pitt Field.
