Baseball Kicks-off Spring Trip With Three-Game Set At Richmond This Weekend

The Quinnipiac University baseball team will travel to Richmond, VA to take on the University of Richmond in a three-game series starting Saturday, Mar. 8  at 2:00 p.m. and wrapping up with a doubleheader on Sunday, Mar. 9 at 11 a.m.

ALL-TIME AGAINST RICHMOND 
Quinnipiac is 3-6 all-time against the University of Richmond. The Bobcats took two out of three in 2011 but lost all three games of the series in 2012. Last season, Quinnipiac was 1-2 against the Spiders.  

SCOUTING THE RICHMOND SPIDERS
Richmond hosts Quinnipiac this weekend with a record of 2-8 after dropping its first seven games of the season before taking 2-of-3 from Fairfield last weekend. Matt Davey and Kurtis Brown power the Spiders, with both checking in at .300 or better at the plate. Dacey leads the team in hitting with a .321 average (9-28) to go with two homers, five RBI, and eight runs scored.  Doug Kraeger has a team-high 11 hits, including a team-best four doubles, while also blasting a home run with four RBI and six runs scored. Richmond has three pitchers in Zak Sterling, Zach Grossfeld, and Dylan Stoops with an ERA under 3.00. Sterling leads the staff in innings (12 2/3) and ERA (2.13) while posting a 1-1 record. Grossfeld is 0-1 with a 2.79 ERA with 10 strikeouts in 9 2/3 innings pitched. Jonathan de Marte is Richmond's third starter, and has logged 12 1/3 innings over three starts.

TOUGH THOMAS
Sophomore Justin Thomas (Enfield, Conn) has been tabbed with two no-decisions to start the season but the lefty has been lights out so far this year. Thomas leads the team in innings pitched (14) and strikeouts (10) while posting the second lowest ERA (0.64).  Thomas will look for his first win of the season this weekend.

GOOD WHEN IT MATTERS
Left-handed batters are hitting .222 (4-18) against Thomas in his first two starts, while the southpaw from Enfield, Conn. has held righties to just four hits in 29 at-bats for a .138 clip. With runners on base, opposing teams are hitting just .080 (2-25) and Thomas has yet to give up a hit in 15 at-bats against him with two outs.

STEADY GUGLIETTI
Junior Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Conn) had a big series last weekend in Knoxville, collecting four hits - three of which went for extra bases. Guglietti leads the team in batting average .333 (7-21), hits (7) and doubles (3) and will look to continue his hot hitting this weekend. He also boasts a team-best six-game hitting streak.

On Saturday March 8th Quinnipiac freshman Thomas Jankins (0-2, 14.62) will face Richmond's Jonathan de Marte (1-1, 6.57).  In the first game on Sunday March 9th Quinnipiac sophomore Justin Thomas (0-0, 0.64) will face Richmond's Zach Grossfeld (0-1, 2.79).  In the second game Quinnipiac freshman Gregory Egan (0-1, 17.18) will face Richmond's Zak Sterling (1-1, 2.13).

GETTING BACK ON TRACK
Quinnipiac will look to get their first win of the season on its spring trip which includes the three-game series at Richmond followed by single games at Duke and High Point before wrapping-up the trip with a four-game set at Navy.

BACK UP NORTH
The Bobcats – weather and field conditions permitting – will play at Fordham on Tuesday, Mar. 18 before its home opener against former Northeast Conference foe Sacred Heart on Thursday, Mar. 20. The Bobcats will play their first MAAC games on Saturday, Mar. 22 when they host Manhattan for a doubleheader at 12 p.m. and a single game on Sunday, Mar. 23.
