Baseball Freshman Hurler Thomas Jankins Leads Bobcats To 6-1 Win At Richmond

RICHMOND, Va.- The Quinnipiac University baseball team defeated the Richmond Spiders, 6-1, for its first win of the 2014 season at Pitt Field in Richmond, Va. The Bobcats improve to 1-6 on the season, while Richmond drops to 2-9 on the year.

Freshman pitchers Thomas Jankins (West Brookfield, Mass) and Matthew Osieja (Wyckoff, N.J.) stifled the Spider offense, holding Richmond to eight base runners for the afternoon.  Jankins was tagged for a run in the first and then cruised through his next six innings of work before handing the ball off to Oseija in the eighth inning.

At the plate, sophomore transfer Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Conn.) was 2-for-4 with two RBI while Rob Pescitelli (West Islip, N.Y.) also collected two hits, including a triple that scored two runs. Ryan Nelson (Knoxville, Tenn.) also drove in the run, while Brian Ruditys (Boothwyn, Pa.) was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

Jankins not only lead the Bobcats to the team's first win of the season, but the freshman earned his first career collegiate victory. Jenkins squashed the Spiders, only allowing one run over seven innings. The right-hander yielded five hits and walked two while striking out four. Southpaw Osieja pitched two innings, walking one batter. He faced six batters for the day, forcing a double play to end the ballgame.

The Bobcats wasted no time to get on the scoreboard as lead-off hitter Ruditys lined a double to left center field to start the game. With one out in the inning, Ruditys was singled home by Iannotti for the first Bobcat run of the game. It was Iannotti's second RBI of the season. After Vin Guglietti's (East Haven, Conn.) double-play ball retired Ianotti, but allowing Guglietti to reach, Scott Donaghue (Marlboro, N.J.) reached first on a dropped third strike. With two outs, and two men on, Pescitelli tripled home both runners to give Quinnipiac a three-run lead before Nelson singled home Pescitelli to cap the scoring for the inning and giving the Bobcats an early 4-0 advantage.

After Richmond answered with a run in the bottom of the first, the Bobcats added two more in the top of the second. The first came on a successful double-steal by Ruditys, who stole second, and Matthew Oestreicher (North Haven, Conn.), who snuck home on the play. Iannotti delivered for his second time in as many innings with another RBI single to bring the score to 6-1.

The Bobcats return to the field against Richmond on Sunday, Mar. 9 for a double-header at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. ET at Pitt Field.
