NEW BRITAIN, Conn- The Quinnipiac University baseball team defeated Central Connecticut 6-4 in a non-conference, midweek match-up in New Britain, Conn. With the win, The Bobcats improves to 5-14 on the season while Central Connecticut falls to 4-6 on the season.
Freshman Matthew Batten (Shelton, Conn) and sophomore Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Conn) led the Bobcats' offense, each tallying three hits on the day. Batten was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Iannotti was 3-for-5 with two doubles and one run scored.
In the top of the 4th, Iannotti led off with a double to center field. Iannotti was then moved to third on a single by sophomore Ryan Nelson (Knoxville, Tenn). Senior Nic Civale (East Windsor, Conn) laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Iannotti and give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
Central Connecticut responded in the bottom of the 4th when Dominic Severino singled to score J.P. Sportman and tie the game up at 1-1.Quinnipiac bounced back in the top of the 5th, scoring three runs to take a 4-1 lead. Sophomore Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) reached base with an one-out single, followed by a double by Brian Ruditys (Boothwyn, Pa.) down the left field line to score Palladino and make it a 2-1 Quinnipiac lead. Batten singled to right field to score Ruditys and extend the lead to 3- before Iannotti doubled to right to move Ruditys to third. Junior Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Conn) then grounded out to first to score Ruditys and make it a 4-1 Quinnipiac lead.
Central Connecticut scored three runs in the bottom of the 7th on sacrifice flies from Connor Fitzsimmons and J.P. Sportman and an RBI single from Josh Ingham to make it a 4-4 game.
Quinnipiac took the lead back in the top of the 9th when senior Mike Blumenthal (Dix Hills, N.Y.) led off the inning with a single and before he scored on a single by Batten to give Quinnipiac a 5-4 lead. Iannotti then singled to put runners on first and second with two outs before Guglietti singled to score Batten and give the Bobcats a two-run lead, 6-4.
Senior Gary Binkiewicz (Scotch Plains, N.J.) came in and tossed a scoreless 9th with a strikeout to pick up his third save of the season and give Quinnipiac the win.
Junior Matthew Lorenzetti started the game for Quinnipiac and went six very strong innings, allowing only one run on four hits while striking out three but was handed the no-decision. Senior Matt DeRosa (Monroe, Conn) picked up his first win of the season in relief after tossing 1 2/3 scoreless innings allowing only two hits.
Quinnipiac has now won three of their last four games and will look to extend its solid play when it hosts Rider for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match-up at the QU Baseball Field in Hamden, Conn. on Saturday, Mar. 29 and Sunday, Mar. 30.
