QU Baseball's Matthew Lorenzetti Picks Up First Career Win With 10-4 Victory At Hartford

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University baseball team tagged Hartford for 10 runs on 13 hits in a 10-4 victory at Fiondella Field in West Hartford, Conn. The Bobcats pick up their seventh victory in their last 10 games to improve to 9-16 overall while Hartford drops to 16-11 on the season.

The Bobcats' offense exploded for 10 runs on 13 hits, led by sophomore Ryan Nelson (Knoxville, Tenn.) who was 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles, while driving in one run and scoring another. Reigning MAAC Player of the Week Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Conn.) was 2-for-5 with his team-leading second home run of the year while Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) also homered as part of a 2-for-4 day that included three runs scored. Freshman Matthew Batten (Shelton, Conn.) was 3-for-6 to extend his hitting streak to seven games.

On the  mound, Matthew Lorenzetti (Marlboro, N.J.) held Hartford to three runs on seven hits across six innings for his first career win. Freshman Matthew Osieja (Wyckoff, N.J.) picked up the save after holding the Hawks to a single run over the final three innings of the non-conference tilt.

Palladino's first career home run came in the third inning to tie the game at 1-1. Hartford's Ryan Lukach's two-run homer in the bottom of the third gave the Hawks a 3-1 lead, but it was all the Hawks could muster against Lorenzetti. The junior right-handed pitcher allowed one baser over the next 2 1/3 innings before pitching around a pair of base runners in the sixth. Osieja entered in the seventh, and gave up a lead-off double to Dalton Ruch, who scored on a single by Brady Sheetz. Osieja was able to settle in, pitch a scoreless eighth before slamming the door on the Hartford offense in the ninth.

Trailing 3-1, Quinnipiac plated three runs in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead that it would hold for the rest of the game. Guglietti poked his second homer of the year before Scott Donaghue (Marlboro, N.J.) was hit by a pitch. A double by Nelson moved Donaghue to third before a throwing error allowed Donaghue and Nelson to score to give the Bobcats the lead.

In the seventh, Palladino led off with a single before stealing second base. After Hartford retired the next two batters, Guglietti singled through the right-side of the infield for his team-leading 10th two-out RBI of the year. After Donaghue reached on an error, Nelson singled to right field to score Guglietti and give Quinnipiac a 6-3 lead.

After Hartford answered in the bottom half of the inning, Quinnipiac responded with a three-run eighth inning, keyed off a balk and a wild pitch that set-up sophomore Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Conn.) with an RBI to give the Bobcats a 9-3 lead. In the 10th, it was Batten driving in Rob Pescitelli (Bay Shore, N.Y.) with Quinnipiac's 10th run of the game.

The Bobcats are back in action this weekend when they resume Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play in New Rochelle, N.Y. with a three-game set at Iona. The Bobcats and Gael will play a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 12 at 1 p.m. followed by a single, nine-inning outing on Sunday, Apr. 13 at 1 p.m.
