New Rochelle, N.Y.- The Quinnipiac baseball team swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader against Iona, winning the first game 3-0 before taking the back-end of the twin-bill, 2-1 in extra innings. With the sweep, Quinnipiac won its fourth and fifth consecutive games, respectively, to improve to 11-16 on the season and 6-3 in MAAC play, while they also improve to 9-3 in their last 12 games. The losses drop Iona to 6-18 on the season and 3-5 in MAAC play.
Freshman hurler Thomas Jankins (West Brookfield, Mass) was the star on the mound for Quinnipiac in the first game tossing a complete game shutout, holding the Gaels to only three hits while striking out eight to pick up his third win of the season. Sophomore Justin Thomas (Enfield, Conn) started the second game for the Bobcats and tossed 5 1/3 solid innings. Thomas gave up only one run, but took the no-decision. Freshman Matthew Osieja (Marlboro, N.J.) picked up his fourth win of the season in relief tossing 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Senior Gary Binkiewicz (Scotch Plains, N.J.) closed out the game with a scoreless inning to pick up his fifth save of the season.
At the plate, sophomores Rob Pescitelli (West Islip, N.Y.) and Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Conn) led the way offensively for Quinnipiac each totaling three hits in the two games. Junior Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Conn) and sophomore Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) each had two hits on the day, while Guglietti drove in a run in both games to increase his team lead to 19 for the year.
Game One Recap:
Quinnipiac took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st when junior Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Conn) singled to left field to score freshman Matthew Batten (Shelton, Conn) who reached earlier in the inning when he was hit by a pitch. Quinnipiac added another run in the top of the 3rd when Batten laid down a sac bunt to score junior Brian Ruditys (Boothwyn, PA) and give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.
The Bobcats extended their lead in the top of the 5th when sophomore Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) tripled down the right field line to score senior Mike Blumenthal (Dix Hills, N.Y.) to make it 3-0, which proved to be plenty of support for Jankins as the Bobcats won 3-0 to take the series opener.
Game Two Recap:
Quinnipiac jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when sophomore Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Conn) singled with two outs and was then driven in by Guglietti on a double down the left field line.
Iona responded in the bottom of the 4th inning when Zach Brown singled to score Jimmy Guiliano to tie the game up at 1. Quinnipiac regained the lead in the top of the 8th when sophomore Ryan Nelson (Knoxville, Tenn) drove in Scott Donaghue (Marlboro, N.J.) to give the Bobcats a 2-1 lead. Binkiewicz closed it out in the bottom of the 8th to give the Bobcats a 2-1 win and clinch the series victory.
Quinnipiac will go for the sweep as they take on Iona in the series finale tomorrow Sunday April 13th at 1:00 PM at City Park in New Rochelle, N.Y.
