QU Baseball Falls To Hartford, 5-3; Blumenthal Records Third Consecutive Multiple-Hit Game

HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac University baseball team lost to Hartford, 5-3, in a non-conference game at the QU Baseball Field in Hamden, Conn. With the loss, Quinnipiac drops to 15-17 overall while Hartford improves to 22-14 on the year.

Quinnipiac sophomore Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) led the Bobcats with three hits while senior Mike Blumenthal (Dix Hills, N.Y.) had his third straight multiple-hit day, going 2-for-3 against the Hawks. Freshman Matthew Oestreicher (North Haven, Conn.) was also 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Conn.) also collected two hits and also drove in his team-leading 27th run of the season. Matthew Batten (Shelton, Conn.) and Scott Donaghue (Marlboro, N.J.) both drove in runs for the Bobcats.

On the mound, Matthew Lorenzetti (Marlboro, N.J.) gave up four runs - three earned - on three hits over 3 2/3 innings. Lorenzetti walked six in his second outing against Hartford this season. He was lifted in the fourth in favor of sophomore Joseph Scaglione (Wyckoff, N.J.). Scaglione pitched the final 5 1/3 innings, holding Hartford to one unearned run on three hits.

Quinnipiac got on the board first when Rob Pescitelli (Bayshore, N.Y.) legged-out his team-leading fifth triple of the season to lead off the second inning. After Ryan Nelson (Knoxville, Tenn.) was hit by a pitch, Scott Donaghue (Marlboro, N.J.) hit flyball to left field that was deep enough to score Pescitelli and give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.

The lead proved to be short-lived as Hartford tagged Quinnipiac starter for three runs in its next at-bat. Chris Deldebbio led off the inning with a single before consecutive doubles by Adam Touhey and David MacKinnon which scored Deldebbio and Touhey to give Hartford a 2-1 lead. After Ryan Lukach bunted MacKinnon to third, James Alfonso doubled him home to give Hartford a 3-1 lead.

After Hartford extended its lead to 5-1 in the fifth, Quinnipiac struck again in the fifth. Blumenthal picked up his second hit of the game before going to third on a single by Matthew Oestreicher (North Haven, Conn.). Blumenthal was retired on a play at the plate before Matthew Batten (Shelton, Conn.) drove in Oestreicher to pull Quinnipiac to within three runs, 5-2.

The Bobcats got another back in the seventh. Oestreicher led off the inning with a double before Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) singled to move Oestreicher to third. After Batten struck out, Palladino stole second to put both runners in scoring position. After Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Conn.) popped up to first, Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Conn.) ripped a single to second base to score Oestreicher, but Palladino was thrown out at home to end the inning.

Quinnipiac returns to action on Wednesday, Apr. 23 when it hosts the University of Connecticut for a non-conference match-up at 3 p.m. at the QU Baseball Field in Hamden, Conn.
