The Quinnipiac University baseball team lost the first game of its three-game series at Radford University, 11-3. With the loss, Quinnipiac drops to 15-19 overall while the Highlanders improve to 23-17.
Quinnipiac junior Brian Ruditys (Boothwyn, Pa.) was 2-for-3 with a double and a stolen base while Matthew Batten (Shelton, Conn.), Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Conn.) and Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Conn.) all drove in runs. Guglietti's season-leading RBI total reaches 28 for the year. Bobcat freshman Thomas Jankins (West Brookfield, Mass.) took the loss after giving up four runs over six innings of work. Matt DeRosa (Monroe, Conn.) pitched 1 1/3 innings, giving up seven runs on three hits - with only four runs earned in the game. Kevin Sustad (Merrick, N.Y.) pitched a scoreless 2/3 of an inning in relief.
Quinnipiac took an early lead when Iannotti and Guglietti drove in runs in the top of the first as the Bobcats held a 2-0 advantage after their first at-bats. Radford cut Quinnipiac's lead in half in the bottom half of the inning before taking the lead with a three-run fourth inning.
After Radford plated three more runs in the seventh to take a 7-2 lead, Quinnipiac's Batten drove in Matthe Oestreicher (North Haven, Conn.) to pull the Bobcats within four runs late in the game. Radford pushed across four in the bottom half of the inning to take a commanding 11-3 lead.
Quinnipiac and Radford will resume its three-game series with the second game on Saturday, Apr. 26 at 4 p.m. before concluding the series on Sunday, Apr. 27 at 12 Noon.
