The Quinnipiac University baseball team will head down I-95 to take on Fairfield University in a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series on May 10-11 at Alumni Field in Fairfield, Conn. The Bobcats enter the weekend at 15-24 overall and 10-6 in the MAAC, good for fourth place in the conference standings. Fairfield hosts the Bobcats with a record of 26-19 overall and 11-6 in conference play and currently sit in third place, half a game ahead of Quinnipiac.
THE PLAYOFF PICTURE
The top six teams in the MAAC standings will advance to the 2014 MAAC Championship tournament on May 21-25 at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, N.J. Canisius (14-4) are currently in first place, followed by Siena (13-5) and Fairfield (11-6). The Bobcats check-in at 10-6 in fourth place, followed by Monmouth (9-7) in fifth. Niagara (8-11), Iona (7-11), Manhattan (8-13), Saint Peter's (6-11), Marist (6-12) and Rider (5-11) fill out the remaining field.
SCOUTING THE FAIRFIELD STAGS
Ryan Plourde leads the Stags with a .340 average while also checking in with a team-best 53 hits and 36 runs scored while also accumulating two home runs and 23 runs-batted-in. Plourde has nine doubles and a team-high three triples while also posting a .474 slugging percentage and a .458 on-base percentage. Jake Salpietro is currently hitting .314 (49-156) with team-highs in home runs (5), RBI (38), doubles (13) and slugging percentage (.506). On the mound, EJ Ashworth is 5-2 with a 2.57 ERA while Mike Wallace is 4-4 with a 3.41 ERA over a team-high 68 2/3 innings pitched. Wallace also leads the team with 44 strikeouts. Against MAAC competition, Ashworth is 3-0 with a 1.63 ERA while Wallace is 4-1 with a 1.49 ERA.
Quinnipiac junior Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Conn.) leads Quinnipiac in hits (50), runs scored (27), doubles (10), home runs (5), RBI (31), average (.342), slugging percentage (.527) and on-base percentage (.412).
Sophomore Rob Pescitelli (Bayshore, N.Y.) currently leads the MAAC conference with five triples for the year.
Quinnipiac freshman Thomas Jankins (West Brookfield, Mass.) gets the nod for the first game of the Bobcats' series against Fairfield, and enters the weekend at 4-7 overall with a 4.30 ERA. Jankins is 3-3 with a 2.14 ERA with 29 strikeouts in 42 innings pitched with two shutouts.
Justin Thomas (Enfield, Conn.) will start the second game of the series. Thomas is 1-4 with a 3.64 ERA, including a 1-1 record against MAAC opponents. Thomas also carries a 3.38 ERA in conference play. Thomas leads the MAAC, while ranking 39th nationally, with 6.22 hits-allowed-per-game; he also ranks third in the MAAC and 105th (out of 200) with a 1.06 WHIP.
Brandon Shileikis (North Dighton, Mass.) enters the weekend at 2-1 overall with a 3.77 ERA, including a 2-0 mark with a 2.33 ERA in conference play. Shileikis leads the MAAC in fewest hits allowed (40), while ranking second in fewest runs (21) and earned runs (18) allowed.
Quinnipiac freshman Matt Osieja (Wyckoff, N.J.) currently ranks second among all MAAC relief pitchers in appearances with 19, matching Binkiewicz's mark of 19 appearances last season, while one more appearances would make him just the third pitcher in Quinnipiac Division I era with 20 appearances in a season. Mike Spahr (23) holds the program record set in 2005 while Eric Breshcer saw action in 20 games in 2007.
After its final non-conference game against Sacred Heart on Tuesday, May 13, the Bobcats will conclude the regular season on May 15-16 at Siean.
