The Quinnipiac University field hockey placed 13 student-athletes on the 2009 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad, as announced by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association this week. The National Academic Squad recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2009-10 academic year.
"It is always rewarding to see our Quinnipiac student-athletes achieve success in the classroom," head coach Becca Kohli said. "They are student-athletes that are here to earn a degree and eventually find a career that they find rewarding. I am proud to see such a wonderful head start by these 13 fine students on our field hockey team and I am most impressed by MacKenzie Liptak, Christine Grady, Lauren Hartnett and Cassie Adams for earning this award for the past four years."
Seniors Cassie Adams (Sushan, N.Y.), Christine Grady (Enfield, Conn.), Lauren Hartnett (Walpole, Mass.) Bonnie Shea (Walpole, Mass.), Brandy Longacre (Bethlehem, Pa.), Katherine Van Nostrand (Derry, N.H.) and MacKenzie Liptak (Schuylerville, N.Y.), junior Liz Marini and sophomores Kimberly Cunniff (Walpole, Mass.), Nicole Lewis (East Amherst, N.Y.)as well as freshmen Danielle Czysz (Hillsborough, N.J.), Kristin Engelke (Medford, N.J.) and Nicole Serrante (Bridgewater, N.J.) represented Quinnipiac on the national academic team. Of those honored, Adams, Grady, Hartnett and Liptak were honored as part of the group that received the award each year of their four-year careers.
Earlier this fall, Quinnipiac was honored with the Northeast Conference Sportsmanship Award while filling 17 of the Quinnipiac Athletics-wide 60 spots on the 2009 NEC Fall Academic Honor Roll. The field hockey team, in conjunction with the women's soccer team, helped raise over $600 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation as part of the "Play For The Cure" breast cancer awareness initiative.
