Jess Rusin's Hat Trick Leads Field Hockey To 6-0 Win Against Colgate
Quinnipiac field hockey sophomore Jess Rusin (Garwood, N.J.) scored a career-best three goals for her first career hat trick as the Bobcats defeated Colgate, 6-0. Quinnipiac improves to 3-1 on the season while Colgate drops to 1-3 on the season. The Bobcats 3-1 start is their best in the program's Division I history.
"We played a total 70-minute performance today, with a few individuals exceeding all expectations," head coach Becca Main Kohli said. "Jess Rusin really put it all together tonight and was supported by the play of Katie Notarianni."
The hat trick was the first for the Bobcats since Kaitlyn Notarianni (Clarks Summit, Pa.) scored three times against Lehigh in last year's season-opener. Four different players scored for the Bobcats, including Notarianni, Kim Cunniff (Walpole, Mass.) and Jessica Portal (Avon, Conn.). Russin picked up an assist, as did Amanda Danziger (Smithtown, N.Y.).
"Our leaders, Kim Cunniff and Meagan McCreedy kept the team focused for the entire game and we are receiving great outcomes because of our speed and strong basic skills."
Notarianni scored just over seven minutes into the game to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. Notarianni has now scored in all four of Quinnipiac's games, and is second with seven points. Rusin scored twice, within one-minute-and-seven-seconds, to give Quinnipiac a 3-0 lead before Cunniff scored off a penalty stroke to send Quinnipiac to halftime leading 4-0.
Rusin deposited her third goal of the night at the 45:53 mark before assisting Portal on her first career goal in the 55th minute. Goalkeeper Nicole Lewis (East Amherst, N.Y.) had four saves in 70 minutes for the shutout, her first of the season.
Quinnipiac is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 11 when they play at No. 6 Penn State at 12 p.m.
