Field Hockey Falls To Yale, 3-2; Rusin Scores Twice In Loss
Quinnipiac field hockey junior Jess Rusin (Garwood, N.J.) scored twice but the Bobcats fell to Yale, 3-2, in a non-conference match-up at Johnson Field in New Haven, Conn. Quinnipiac moves to 2-2 on the season while Yale improves to 1-1.
Rusin scored the game's first goal just under three minutes into the game. With the Bobcats deep in Yale's zone, Kristen Engelke (Medford, N.J.) unleashed a shot from the top of the circle. Rusin slid in behind the defense and was able to get her stick on the ball, re-directing it past Yale's Emily Cain to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead.
After both team's were unable to capitalize on several opportunities over the remainder of the first half, Yale scored twice to take a 2-1 lead in the first ten minutes of the second half. Nicle Wells scored on a pass from Gabrielle Garcia before Molly Wolf netted a marker off a penalty corner, with assists going to Erica Borgo and Emily Schuckert.
In the 47th minute, it was Rusin again, scoring on a spectacular drive on goal. Rusin cut through the Bulldogs' defense and was left one-on-one with Cain. Cain came out to challenge Rusin when the ball came off the junior forward's stick, but Rusin dove and poked the ball under a lunging Cain leaving it to trickle into the Bulldogs' goal and tie the game at 2-2.
With less than five minutes to play, Borgo found the scoring column when Garcia picked up the ball in front of the Bobcats' cage and slid it over to Borgo. Borgo then played the ball to the opposite post to break the tie and give Yale a 3-2 lead.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 9 when it travels to Burlington, Vt. to face the University of Vermont at 12 p.m. at Moulton Winder Field. After a second roadtrip to St. Joseph's in Philadelphia, Pa. on Friday, Sept. 14, the Bobcats return home on Sunday, Sept. 16 to host Lafayette at 12 p.m. at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey Turf Complex in Hamden, Conn.
