NORFOLK, Va. – The Quinnipiac University field hockey team lost to Old Dominion, 7-0, in a non-conference game played at the J.R. Hill Sports Complex in Norfold, Va. The Bobcats' loss snaps a four-game winning streak and drops Quinnipiac to 5-5 on the year while Old Dominion improves to 4-6 on the year.
Old Dominion's Rosario Villagra had a hat trick, with her first goal scored in the 21st minute of play off of ODU's fifth corner of the first half. Caitlin Walsh fired a shot on goal that was kicked away by Bobcats' goalkeeper Megan Conaboy (Clarks Summit, Pa.). Conaboy deflected the Walsh's blast from the top of the circle with her right leg, sending the ball to the same-side post. Villagra was crashing the net and was able to slip a shot under the outstretched stick of a diving Conaboy to give the Lady Monarchs a 1-0 lead. Conaboy finished with six saves for the afternoon.
With a little more than 24 minutes remaining in the game, Old Dominion's Sandra Wagner scored to give the Lady Monarchs a 2-0 lead. With 20 minutes left on the clock, Villagra scored her second goal of the game to give ODU a 3-0 lead. Villagra picked up a loose ball after a Conaboy save to give the Lady Monarchs a three-goal lead.
Old Dominion scored four times in the last 10 minutes of play. Villagra added her third goal of the game with 9:17 remaining when she received the ball on the left post and tucked it just inside the near post to give ODU a 4-0 lead. Wagner added her second goal of the game less than a minute later when she tipped a ball traveling through the circle over the shoulder of Conaboy. Sarah Breen and Emily Harting also scored late to give ODU the 7-0 decision.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 6 when it hosts Yale for a non-conference match-up at 12 p.m. at the Quinnipaic Field Hockey Turf Complex in Hamden, Conn.
The Quinnipiac University field hockey team will participate in the National Foundation for Cancer Research's fundraising campaign, Play4theCure, in which sports teams across the country are invited to participate by committing to donate proceeds from at least one game to NFCR. Quinnipiac will be raising funds during their game against Yale. The Quinnipiac University Field Hockey Parent Association and team is selling raffle tickets for the "Chance Auction". The Chance Auction consists of baskets that will be full of various items donated by Quinnipiac University Athletic Department members and varsity teams as well as donations from the field hockey team and parents. Players on the Quinnipiac University team will be wearing pink warm-up shirts, pink shoe laces and will start the game with a pink ball in support of the cause. All proceeds made from the Chance Auction will be donated to NFCR. The team will also be collecting general donations.
