Cheerleaders Place Sixth At National Championships
HAMDEN, Conn. The Quinnipiac University cheerleading team placed sixth on April 11 in All-Girl Division I at the 2009 NCA/NDA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla., with a raw score of 8.77 and a final score of 8.52 following a .25 deduction. It was the second consecutive sixth-place finish for Quinnipiac and fifth straight top-10 finish for the squad at the annual national championships. The Quinnipiac cheerleaders placed fifth in 2007, after finishing 10th in 2006 and fifth in 2005.
Quinnipiac was ranked eighth following the preliminary round to advance to the finals on Friday, April 11 at the Daytona Beach Band Shell. Only the top half of the field qualifies for the finals.
"Quinnipiac has consistently remained contenders with very large and well-respected programs. Our goal was to qualify for the finals and then move up in the rankings, which we accomplished," said Mary Ann Powers, Quinnipiac University cheerleading head coach. "The coaching staff was pleased that the team recovered from the mistakes made during the preliminary round. We are excited about the incoming freshman class and the talented members of this year's team who will propel us forward next season."
More than 10,000 cheerleaders, dancers, coaches and fans took part in this year's NCA/NDA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championship, the largest collegiate cheer and dance event in the world. The event was held April 8-12 and hosted over 200 college teams from across the country in 20 divisions.
Other competitors in the division included the University of Maryland, University of Louisville, Kennesaw State University, University of South Carolina, The Ohio State University, North Carolina State University, University of Massachusetts and University of Pittsburgh.
The preliminary round began on April 9, when 20 cheerleaders from Quinnipiac's 26-member team performed a 45-second crowd response segment. Afterward the team performed its routine, including: standing tumbling, jumps, pyramids, basket tosses, running tumbling, partner stunts and a dance.
Earlier this season, Quinnipiac placed first on March 7 against eight other teams at the All-New England Open, and also captured first at the Nonnewaug Cheer Challenge on Feb. 14.
