HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac Acrobatics & Tumbling team will travel to College Park, Md. to compete in its first National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association meet of the season on Saturday, Dec. 4 at 6 p.m. against preseason coaches' poll No. 1 Maryland and again on Sunday, Dec. 5 at 1 p.m. against No. 3 Fairmont State.
"We look forward to competing for this second season in the NCATA format that continues to provide opportunities for female student-athletes who have been trained in the skill sets of gymnastics, acrobatics, competitive cheer, and diving," said head coach Mary Ann Powers. "My goal is for us to improve as a team following every event we participate in this season."
The scoring format for the meet is based on six events throughout the head-on meet which include compulsories, partner stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, standing and running tumbling, and team routine. Of the 350 total possible points to be earned, the team with the highest combined score is awarded the winner of the day's meet.
"USA Gymnastics will be the sanctioning organization for NCATA events in support of the efforts to develop the sport within the NCAA," as stated in the NCATA organization website.
Azusa Pacific, Baylor, Fairmont State, Maryland, Oregon, and Quinnipiac are the current members that will compete in the NCATA during the 2010-11 season.
Senior captains Nicole Castiglione (Edison, N.J.), Erin Trotman (Bristol, Conn.) and Caitlyn Armstrong (Centereach, N.Y.) will lead the Bobcats during the 2010-11 season.
"The diverse qualities of our three captains contribute to their strong leadership during both practice and game-time," said Powers. "I expect that their leadership will continue to develop the necessary team chemistry needed throughout the season."
Following this weekend's meet, Quinnipiac is scheduled to travel to Azusa, Calif. to face Azusa Pacific on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 1 p.m. and Baylor on Sunday, Feb. 6 at 1 p.m. The Bobcats will have their first home meet of the season on Monday, March 21 at 7 p.m. against Oregon, followed by its final home meet of the season on Saturday, March 26 at 11 a.m. against Maryland. Quinnipiac will finish its season at the NSCTA National Championships which will be held at Eugene, Ore. spanning from Thursday, April 7 to Sunday, April 11.
