Acrobatics and Tumbling Defeats Fairmont, 279.43-274.98, in 2013 Season Opener

FAIRMONT, W.Va.- The Quinnipiac Acrobatics and Tumbling team defeated Fairmont, 279.33-274.43, in its 2013 season-opener at the Joe Retton Arena in Fairmont, W.Va. The Bobcats stand at 1-0 as Fairmont drops to 1-1 on the early season.

Coming out of the first event of the evening, Compulsory, Fairmont jumped out to an early lead, 37.8-37.3. Quinnipiac then fought back in the following event , edging the Fighting Falcons, 28.8 to 28.7.  The Acro event showed the growth of the team as they recorded their best overall performance in the event's heat when freshman Montara Tomasetti (Waterford, Conn.) (9.8), senior Christina Lasto (Oxford, Conn.) (9.5) and junior Trisha Pierce (Middletown, Pa.) (9.4), all recorded in the mid- to high-nines for the event.  This was a feat the Bobcats have yet to mark in their past seasons when they only scored in the eights. After the second event, Quinnipiac trailed 66.6-66.0.

Quinnipiac collected the Pyramid event as they responded once again by earning high nines in the heats. This was the Bobcats first event win of the match as it put them behind Fairmont by just a 1/10th of a point, 95.4 – 95.3, before halftime.

After the break the Bobcats responded with three consecutive heat victories in Toss, 28.4-27.7, Tumbling, 55.05-53.5, and Team, 100.68-98.38. The Toss Event, usually the strongest for the Bobcats, gave them their first lead of the evening as they came out on top of Fairmont 123.7 -123.1.  Tumbling proved to be the factor as the Bobcats won five of the six heats to help increase its overall lead to 2.15 with just the team event remaining.  In the final event, Quinnipiac marked a 2.3 lead as they recorded 100.68 to Fairmont's 98.38.

Quinnipiac swept both the Toss and Pyramid event heats against the Fighting Falcons and won four out of the six events of the evening.

Quinnipiac returns to action on Saturday, Mar. 10 when they continue their two game road stint in Waco, Tx. to take on Baylor University. The meet will begin at 1 p.m. in the Ferrel Center.
