Quinnipiac Defeats Baylor in Acrobatics & Tumbling Thriller in Front of Record Crowd

HAMDEN, Conn. – In front of a record crowd of 1,289, less than one-tenth of a point separated Quinnipiac University and Baylor University in the acrobatics & tumbling meet heading into the last heat. Advantage Bobcats. 

Quinnipiac erased its .08 deficit on the final heat, the Team event, and claimed a 279.39-278.83 victory at the TD Bank Sports Center – Quinnipiac's first-ever win over the Bears. The Bobcats improved to 2-0 this year, while Baylor fell to 0-2.   

An exciting meet to say the least, Quinnipiac led through the first four events, 120.47-120.05. However, Baylor battled back at the strength of a 57.50 score in the Tumble event, and carried a mere 177.55-177.47 advantage into the final event.

Quinnipiac regained its composure and put together a tremendous routine – leaving its fate in the judges' hands. The Bobcats' effort was rewarded with 101.92-101.28 score to claim the thrilling, come-from-behind triumph.

The Bobcats won three of the first four events, and four of the six overall. Typically its strongest event, Quinnipiac capitalized on the Pyramid event and gained 1.55 after a final score of 29.45. Quinnipiac led 91.77-91.50 at the break.

During crunch time, Quinnipiac claimed two of the final three heats which played a large role in the result. Taylor Johnson (Foxboro, Mass.) posted a score of 9.78 to win the Open Tumble, and then Quinnipiac followed with the win in the Team Event. Kelsey Rule (Kendall Park, N.J.) also took part in an individual heat, totaling a 9.75 figure in the Six Element Tumble.

Quinnipiac posted season-highs in the Toss and Tumble events. The Bobcats are one of five teams in the NCATA that are undefeated to this point in the season.

Prior to the meet, Quinnipiac Athletics and the Acrobatics & Tumbling program honored the A&T senior class members. Gina Antonelli, Danielle Burns, Victoria Cribbs, Cera Orner, Trisha Pierce, Ashaa Russell and Gina Yeadon each competed for the last time at the TD Bank Sports Center.   

The Bobcats make their way across the country for their next two competitions. Quinnipiac takes on Oregon and Azusa Pacific in a dual meet on Monday, March 10 in Eugene; and then makes its way to Hawaii for the second meet of the road trip. QU squares off against Hawaii Pacific in Honolulu.
