HONOLULU, Hawaii- The Quinnipiac acrobatics and tumbling team defeated Hawaii Pacific University, 270.96-266.54, on Wednesday evening at Moanalua High School in Honolulu, Hawaii. Bobcats improve to 3-2 while Hawaii Pacific drops to 0-2 for the 2014 season.
A close competition throughout the meet, Quinnipiac was able to sweep the Sea Warriors in all six events. The sweep is the second for the Bobcats in program history, their first sweep coming this season back on Feb. 1.
Quinnipiac came ready as they easily took the first three events of the first half. Quinnipiac whom led from the start, jumped ahead in Compulsory, 36.15-35.95. The Bobcats would continue building on their score in the Acro event posting, 27.52-26.90, over HPU. In the Pyramid event, the Bobcats were matched in the first heat with a tied score of 9.75.
In the following twisting pyramid heat, seniors Gina Antonelli (Jackson, N.J.) and Ashaa Russell (Bronx, N.Y.) , juniors Stephanie Palange (West Springfield, Mass.), Cara Seckinger (Danbury, Conn.) and Christine Rochester (Waterford, Conn.), sophomores Taylor Johnson (Foxboro, Mass.), Brittney Kusmierski (Omaha, Neb.) and Kayla McCormack (Hanson, Mass.) , and freshman Noelle Brasier(Simi Valley, Calif.) posted an almost perfect score of 9.90 to give Quinnipiac the advantage. The Bobcats entered halftime with only .92 points separating them from HPU 92.62-91.70.
In the final stanza, the Bobcats continued on their solid start marking high scores throughout the Toss (28.60-28.00), Tumble (55.86-55.00) and Team (93.88-91.84) events. In the toss event, Quinnipiac once again held court, in all heats. In heat three for the Bobcats, Rochester, McCormack, Kusmierski and Brooke Artz (Whitman, Mass.) along with freshman Kelsey Rule (Kendall Park, N.J. ), posted a high score of 9.85 in the open toss heat. The Bobcats would continue on as they edged the Sea Warriors in the final two events.
In their inaugural season in the NCATA, the HPU team fell to 0-2 on the year. Despite the loss they held the 2013 NCATA Runners-Up though out the competition, as they took seven out of the possible 19 heats from Quinnipiac.
The Bobcats will continue on their 2014 season with their final match of the regular season on Saturday, April 5 at Alderson Broaddus University. Quinnipiac will meet both Fairmont State and Alderson Broaddus at the Rex Pyles Arena in Phiippi, W.Va. The teams will take the mat at 1PM.
