HAMDEN, Conn. – Junior Ike Azotam (Boston, Mass.) of the Quinnipiac University men's basketball team has been named the starting power forward for the 2012 Connecticut Hoops Dream Team, announced on Friday, July 27 by members of the association.
The CT Hoops Dream Team, released by Brian Powers, features a 12-man roster from Division I collegiate teams around the Nutmeg State. Joining Azotam on the starting five is Shabazz Napier (UConn), Shane Gibson (Sacred Heart), DeAndre Daniels (UConn) and Ryan Olander (UConn). The reserves include Ryan Boatright (UConn), Kyle Vinales (CCSU), Austin Morgan (Yale), Des Wade (Fairfield), Omar Calhoun (UConn), Mark Nwakamma (Hartford), Justin Swidowski (Sacred Heart) and Jeremiah Kreisberg (Yale).
Ike Azotam had a fantastic sophomore year with the Bobcats and established himself as an elite player in the Northeast Conference by averaging 15 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Azotam was named to the All-NEC and NABC Division I All-District 18 Second Teams for his accomplishments on the hardwood. He posted a conference-high 14 double-doubles on the season, moving into a two-way tie for third place with 16 career double-doubles amongst active NEC players. Azotam is putting together a strong offseason and has the potential to be the most dominant post-presences in the league this year.
"It is an honor for Ike Azotam to be named to the Connecticut Hoops Dream Team," said Head Coach Tom Moore. "Ike made incredible strides in 2011-12 from his freshman to sophomore seasons. He became a consistent scoring option and one of the best rebounders in the country. We are hopeful for continued improvement as Ike becomes an upperclassman and one of our team leaders over the next two seasons."
The Bobcats open the 2012-13 season in West Hartford at the Connecticut 6 Classic. Quinnipiac will take on Hartford at 7 p.m. on November 10.
