SOMERSET, N.J. – For the second consecutive season, junior Ike Azotam (Boston, Mass.) of the Quinnipiac men's basketball team was named to the Northeast All-Conference Second Team, announced on Tuesday, March 5, 2013. Azotam was the driving force behind an 11-7 record in league play and the program's eighth straight trip to the NEC Tournament. Azotam was also selected to the College Sports Madness NEC Second Team as well.
"We are thrilled that Ike Azotam has been rewarded for his fine season with a 2nd Team All-NEC selection," said head coach Tom Moore. "Ike has had another terrific year as he continues to establish himself as one of the toughest low-post players in the NEC. Ike's improvement and consistency over his career have helped us to continue to be one of the best rebounding teams in the country."
The 6-7 power forward averaged 13.6 points and 8.1 rebounds through the regular season, placing among the league-leaders in both categories. His 8.1 rebounds were good enough for sixth in the conference, while his 13.6 points per game ranked him 13th – making him one of seven players to be within the top 15 for both categories. Azotam also corralled 10 double-doubles on the season which tied him for first in the league, giving him 26 for his career - just 15 behind Justin Rutty's QU record of 41. Azotam crossed the 20-point plateau in three games this year – highlighted by a 22-point, 11-rebound effort in an overtime win at Saint Francis University (1/17).
Ike Azotam also recorded his 1,000th career point this season to become Quinnipiac's 26th player to accomplish the feat. Azotam, now with 1,071 career points, was the 10th player to score 1,000 points in the Division I era and recently passed DeMario Anderson '08 (1,063) for ninth on the list. Next on the list is Jared Grasso '02, who had 1,134 career points which ranks 25th all-time and eighth in Division I.
On the backboards, Azotam has progressed into one of Quinnipiac's best rebounders of all-time. Ike Azotam surpassed Bill Romano '02 (580) on Quinnipiac's Division I career rebounding list when he grabbed five rebounds against LIU Brooklyn (1/5). The junior power forward (712) currently sits in second place since Quinnipiac joined the NCAA's top division, only trailing Justin Rutty '11 (1,032). He is quickly approaching 10th place on the all-time rebounding list.
The Quinnipiac University men's basketball team (15-15, 11-7 NEC) claimed the No. 6 seed in the NEC Tournament and will head to the two-time defending champion and third-seeded LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds (17-13, 12-6 NEC) for the quarterfinals on Wednesday, March 6, 2013. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
