Complete 2013-14 Quinnipiac Men's Basketball Schedule Set
HAMDEN, Conn. – Under the direction of seventh-year head coach Tom Moore, the Quinnipiac University men's basketball program will begin competition in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) this coming season. The league office officially released the 2013-14 conference schedule for its 11 member institutions - a slate that includes 10 home games and 10 on the road for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats open their inaugural campaign in the MAAC at home against instate rival Fairfield on Friday, Dec. 6, before heading to Rider University on Sunday, Dec. 8. Fairfield finished sixth in the standings a year ago, while the Broncs earned the third seed in the MAAC Tournament.
Quinnipiac wraps up its non-conference slate during the three weeks following, and then resumes MAAC conference play just two days into the New Year. The Bobcats host Iona, the 2012 MAAC Champion and NCAA Tournament participant, on Thursday, Jan. 2, before heading on the road to familiar foe Monmouth (Jan. 4). Quinnipiac went 3-0 against Iona and Monmouth last season, which included a 98-92 overtime win against the Gaels at the Paradise Jam.
Up next, the Bobcats will play three of four games at the TD Bank Sports Center – the first featuring a marquee match-up against Manhattan on Jan. 9. Manhattan was this year's preseason favorite in the coaches' poll, and presents an experienced lineup led by MAAC Defensive Player of the Year Rhamel Brown. After that, Quinnipiac makes a trip to Saint Peter's on Jan. 12, before returning home to host Monmouth (Jan. 16) and Niagara (Jan. 18). Niagara earned a bid to the NIT after winning the MAAC regular season, and returns junior guard Antoine Mason, the son of 14-year NBA veteran and all-star Anthony Mason.
Arguably the toughest weekend of the season for Quinnipiac, the Bobcats travel to New York for two games against Iona (Jan. 24) and Manhattan (Jan. 26). The following weekend, Quinnipiac closes out the month at home against Canisius on Jan. 30. The Griffs claimed third in the MAAC preseason poll after posting a 20-14 overall record and an 11-7 mark in MAAC play last year. The 20-win season was the program's first since 2000-01 and the team's 11 MAAC wins were the most for the team since 1998-99.
After a trip to Siena (Feb. 1), the Bobcats entertain Rider on Saturday, Feb. 8 and Marist on Monday, Feb. 10. Siena welcomes eight newcomers including five scholarship freshmen to a program which is coming off of an impressive showing on their foreign tour to Montreal last month. Rider finished with a 19-14 record last year, which saw a first-round win over Hartford in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT), while the Red Foxes, under the direction of first-year head coach Jeff Bower, return a pair of Third Team All-MAAC performers in junior swingman Chavaughn Lewis and senior center Adam Kemp.
Quinnipiac's final stretch is a difficult one with four of its last six games to be played away from home. The stint starts down the road at Fairfield on Feb. 13, and is followed by a home game against Saint Peter's on Feb. 16. Quinnipiac then heads to upstate New York to face Canisius (Feb. 20) and Niagara (Feb. 22), before taking on Siena (Feb. 27) and Marist (Mar. 2) to close out the regular season. The game against the Saints will be Quinnipiac's final regular season home game of the 2013-14 campaign.
For the third straight and final season, the MAAC Championship will be held at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass. from March 6-10.
Quinnipiac's 2013-14 television schedule will be released once finalized, complete with game times and broadcasting networks. As always, fans can find the most up-to-date information regarding all of Quinnipiac's Athletic teams at www.QuinnipiacBobcats.com.
Quinnipiac's regular-season tips off on Saturday, Nov. 9 with the fifth annual Connecticut 6 Classic from Webster Bank Arena. Joining the Bobcats will be Hartford, Yale, Central Connecticut, Sacred Heart, and fellow MAAC foe Fairfield. For the second year in a row, Quinnipiac and Hartford will open the three-game showcase at 3 p.m. Yale and CCSU will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. followed by Sacred Heart and Fairfield in the nightcap at 8 p.m.
