BRISTOL, Conn. – The hype surrounding Umar Shannon's last second buzzer-beater on Saturday caught the attention of ESPN, and was selected as the 10th best play on SportCenter's Top 10 Plays of the Day.
Umar Shannon drained a game-winning three-pointer as time expired to save Quinnipiac in a 90-88 victory over Niagara at the Gallagher Center in upstate New York. It was the Bobcats' seventh straight win and the eighth in their last nine games.
Trailing by one, 88-87, with 1.7 seconds left and the ball to be inbounded under its own hoop, the unimaginable happened. Ike Azotam (Boston, Mass.) launched a three-quarter court pass in the direction of Zaid Hearst (Bethesda, Md.) and NU's Antoine Mason, which deflected down to Umar Shannon. The veteran guard squared his shoulders and drilled the game-winning three as time expired to silence the near sellout crowd. Quinnipiac improved to 19-8 overall and 14-4 in league play.
Quinnipiac returns home for its final game at the TD Bank Sports Center this year. The Bobcats welcome Siena College to Hamden on Thursday, Feb. 27 for an 8:30 p.m. tip-off at the Bank. The game will be televised live on ESPN3, courtesy of the MAAC.
