EDISON, N.J. – Quinnipiac guard Umar Shannon (Atlantic City, N.J.) was tabbed Lou Henson National Player of the Week, announced by College Insider on Monday, February 24, 2014. Umar Shannon returned in dramatic fashion from his two-game absence, leading Quinnipiac to two victories on the road this past weekend. The highlight of Shannon's return came on Saturday afternoon, when he drilled a 22-footer as time expired to save the Bobcats in a 90-88 victory over Niagara. Shannon had nine points, four rebounds and three assists in the triumph.
Two days earlier, Shannon matched a season-high of 26 points in a seven-point win at Canisius. Shannon was on fire during the game, going 8-of-16 from the floor, 4-of-6 from long range and 6-of-7 from behind the arc. He grabbed two rebounds and dished out three assists as well.
During the two-game stretch, he averaged 17.5 points, three rebounds and three assists while shooting 40.0 percent from long range. Shannon logged 36 minutes in each game.
Shannon is averaging 14.7 points, 2.2 assists and 2.0 rebounds per game this season. Quinnipiac is 19-8 overall and on the verge of its third 20-win campaign in the last five years. Quinnipiac was ranked 81st in the NCAA's latest RPI poll.
The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the top Mid-Major Player in Division I college basketball.
The award is named in honor of Lou Henson who retired after a spectacular coaching career that lasted 41 years. When he left the game in 2005 he was sixth all-time in career Division I wins with 779.
