Bobcats’ Seven-Game Winning Streak Snapped in 72-70 Loss to Siena

HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac's seven-game winning streak came to a close on Thursday night, as the Bobcats fell to Siena College in heartbreaking fashion, 72-70, at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden. The loss drops Quinnipiac to 19-9 overall and 14-5 in conference play, but still have the Bobcats in control of second place in the league standings.

Quinnipiac tested its nerves in the final minutes for the second straight game, and sat in the drivers' seat with 49 seconds remaining. Zaid Hearst (Bethesda, Md.) broke a 66-66 tie score with a three-pointer from the wing, and Quinnipiac looked as though free-throws would seal the deal.

However on the ensuing possession, SC's Lavon Long drew a foul and went to the free-throw line with 34 seconds left. Long made the first and missed the second, but Rob Poole corralled the offensive rebound, finished the put-back and drew a foul while tying the score up at 69-69. Poole completed the three-point play and gave Siena a one-point lead with 33 seconds remaining. That was the 13th and final lead change of the game.

Ike Azotam (Boston, Mass.) led Quinnipiac with 15 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks to pick up his 43rd career double-double. Ousmane Drame (Boston, Mass.), although plagued by foul trouble for much of the game, finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds for his 13th double-double of the season. Hearst had 12 points, all in the second half, while Justin Harris (Paterson, N.J.) and Evan Conti (Bayside, N.Y.) had 11 and 10, respectively.

Quinnipiac built a 10-point lead midway through the first half, but Siena erased the deficit with a 10-2 run to close the gap. Neither team led by more than five points in the latter stanza.

Quinnipiac controlled the backboards, 45-37, but was held in check offensively throughout the night. The Bobcats connected on just 40.3 percent of their field goals for the game, and just 39.3 percent in the second half.

Poole led the Saints with 15 points on 4-of-11 shooting. Brett Bisping netted 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to complete the double-double. Marquis Wright dished out seven assists.

Quinnipiac concludes the 2013-14 regular season on Sunday, March 2 at Marist. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at McCann Field House in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
