Men’s Basketball Announces 2014-15 Non-Conference Schedule

HAMDEN, Conn. – Head coach Tom Moore announced the non-conference schedule for the 2014-15 Quinnipiac men's basketball team on Friday. The Bobcats will play six games at the TD Bank Sports Center – highlighted by match-ups with Oregon State and La Salle University. For the first time in program history, Quinnipiac will also serve as the host of the Connecticut 6 Classic.

"I'm very happy with the 2014-15 non-conference schedule," said Moore, who enters his ninth year at the helm of the program. "I think we've done a really good job of challenging our team this year, in particular with the games against a Pac-12 Oregon State team and an Atlantic-10 La Salle team. Outside of those two teams, we also have games against Patriot League power Boston University and traditional America East powers in Vermont and Albany. Add in our regional games with Maine, Hartford, Yale and Lehigh, they're all really good rivalries and will prepare us nicely for our second year in the MAAC."

Five of the non-conference opponents played in the postseason a year ago, including one NCAA Tournament qualifier (Albany) and two NIT qualifiers (Vermont and BU). Quinnipiac joined Yale in the 2014 CIT, the Bobcats fourth national postseason appearance in the last five years, while Oregon State also made the postseason with a trip to the CBI.

Quinnipiac tips off the 2014-15 season on Friday, Nov. 14 when it hosts the sixth annual Connecticut 6 Classic at the TD Bank Sports Center. Joining the Bobcats will be Yale, Hartford, Central Connecticut, Sacred Heart, and fellow MAAC foe Fairfield. Quinnipiac will play cross-town rival Yale in the middle game, a rematch of the 2014 CIT First Round a year ago. Yale went 19-14 last season and advanced to the CIT Championship where its run came to an end with a loss to Murray State. Fairfield and CCSU will play the opening game at 3 p.m. with Hartford and Sacred Heart squaring off for the nightcap at 8 p.m.

The following week on Tuesday, Nov. 18, Quinnipiac welcomes La Salle University to the Bank for the third meeting between the two teams. The Bobcats and the Explorers met for the second time last year in the 2013 College Hoops Tip-off Marathon, where LaSalle escaped with a 73-67 victory at Tom Gola Arena. This year the coveted match-up features two of the premier front courts in all of NCAA basketball. La Salle returns seniors Jerrell Wright and Steve Zack. Wright was an All-Big 5 selection and Zack was the top rebounder in the A-10. Quinnipiac brings back All-MAAC Second Teamer Ousmane Drame (Boston, Mass.).

Over the weekend on Saturday, Nov. 22, Quinnipiac encounters its first away game of the season with a trip up to Albany. The Bobcats (8-2) have dominated the all-time series with the Great Danes, collecting their fourth straight win last season with a 10-point, 79-69, decision in Hamden. Drame corralled a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds in the win.

After that, Quinnipiac returns home for a pair of games the following week where the Bobcats host Hartford on Tuesday, Nov. 25 and Vermont on Sunday, Nov. 30. Quinnipiac defeated both teams last year, both in exciting fashion too. QU erased an 11-point halftime deficit to knock off Hartford in the Connecticut 6 Classic, improving to 17-5 all-time against the Hawks. More impressive was Quinnipiac's decision against Vermont, where it handed the Catamounts an 80-67 loss on their home court. Vermont went on to post a 22-11 record with a bid to the NIT Tournament at seasons end.

The non-conference slate continues in December with one away game and three home games. Quinnipiac travels to Boston University on Sunday, Dec. 14 in search of bringing the all-time series back to even (3-4). For the second straight season, the Terriers defeated the Bobcats in heartbreaking fashion with a 69-66 victory last year in Hamden. Drame and Zaid Hearst (Bethesda, Md.) each recorded a double-double in the losing effort.

The next three will be at home for the Bobcats, who welcome Lehigh University on Thursday, Dec. 18, Oregon State on Sunday, Dec. 21, and Maine on Sunday, Dec. 29. Home court hopes to be advantageous for Quinnipiac who dropped back-to-back games to Lehigh and OSU last season. Lehigh finished 14-18 last year while Oregon State posted a 16-16 record, including a bid to the CBI. It'll mark the first time that Quinnipiac hosts a team from a high major conference at the TD Bank Sports Center.

Quinnipiac wraps up the non-conference slate with a game against Maine. Last year, Quinnipiac set a new Division I margin of victory record, as the Bobcats cruised past Maine, 102-61, at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. The Bobcats had five players in double-figures and out-rebounded the Black Bears by a count of 60-29. Maine went on to post a 6-23 record and hired a new coach, Bob Walsh, at the end of the season.

The MAAC regular-season schedule will be released in September. The format will remain the same with a total of 20 games, each team playing a home-and-away with the 10 other member institutions. The MAAC Championship will be hosted at the Times Union Center in Albany.
