Mike Papale enters his second season with the Bobcats’ coaching staff as the Director of Basketball Operations. Papale worked with the men’s basketball program from 2007-11 as a student-manager, eager to reunite with the Bobcats after a short stint at UMass-Lowell.
Most recently, Papale was an assistant coach at UMass-Lowell. He took part in all facets of the program including recruiting, scouting, player development, film exchange, weight training and academic support. Papale helped a River Hawk program that went 19-11 last season (13-9 in the Northeast-10 Conference/fourth place) and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the fourth straight year.
A student-manager at Quinnipiac from 2007-11, Papale assisted in film exchange, mailings, coordinated travel plans as well as hired and trained other student-mangers. He graduated with a degree in communication and minor in sports studies.
Prior to coaching at UMass Lowell, Papale coached at several levels in the AAU circuit with both the Central Connecticut Hoop Stars and the New England Playaz. He served as the head coach for Central Connecticut’s U-17 team in 2010 and helped lead it to a 35-14 record and a fifth-place showing at the AAU National Championship. While assisting with the New England Playaz AAU program, Papale helped coach players various division one programs including Arizona, Ole Miss, Bryant, Boston University, and Wright State.
Papale is a 2007 graduate of Sheehan H.S. in Wallingford, Conn., where he was a three year varsity player and served as a student assistant his senior year after his career was cut short due to a heart condition. During his senior season he was nominated for the McDonald’s All America team.
Papale is a volunteer and spokesperson for the American Heart Association and Ryan Gomes’ Hoops for Heart Health Foundation.
He currently resides in Wallingford, Conn.
