Men's Ice Hockey Falls To Niagara, 5-1

LEWISTON, N.Y. – The Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey team lost a non-conference match-up to Niagara University, 5-1, at Dwyer Arena in Lewiston, N.Y. Quinnipiac drops to 12-8-2 overall while Niagara improves to 10-9-1 on the season.

Niagara took a 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the game when Jim Burichin received a pass from Brian Dowd just below the blue line in the Bobcats' zone. Burichin unleashed a shot on freshman Dan Clarke (Belleville, Ont.) in goal that beat the first-year netminder to give the host Purple Eagles the early one-goal lead. The goal was Burichin's first of the season while Dowd picked up his eighth assist of the year.

Jean-Marc Beaudoin (St. Paul, Alb.) tied the game with less than six minutes to play in the first period. A night after the Bobcats' power-play resulted in four of their six goals, Quinnipiac scored on a five-on-three advantage. Bryan Leitch (Coquitlam, B.C.) handled the puck in the right face-off circle before dropping a pass to David Marshall (Buffalo, Minn.) behind the Niagara goal. Marshall skated out in front of Juliano Pagliero and put a shot on net. Pagliero blocked Marshalls' shot before Marshall collected the rebound and dropped a pass off to Beaudoin. Beaudoin's one-timer from the opposite post beat Pagliero to tie the game.

The assist gave Marshall a point in 15 consecutive games, the longest scoring streak in Quinnipiac's Division I history. The previous mark of 14 straight games with a goal or an assist was held by former All-American Reid Cashman during the 2006-07 season. Leitch's assist was his NCAA Division I leading 28th of the season and his 97th of his career.

The tie did not last long as Niagara re-took the lead a little more than a minute later. Senior wing Paul Zanette scored on a one-timer off a pass from Ryan Annesley. Zanette's goal, his fifth of the year, banged off a post past Clarke to give the Purple Eagles a 2-1 lead.

Niagara took a 3-1 lead at the 12:40 mark of the second period. Purple Eagles' Tyler Gotta scored on a power-play on an assist from Egor Mironov. After Niagara won the face-off in Quinnipiac's zone, Mironov stepped out in front the Niagara goal before dropping a pass back to Gotta. Gotta's one-time beat Clarke to put Niagara out in front by two goals.

Ted Cook's goal at the 3:27 mark gave Niagara a 4-1 lead heading to the third period. Cook was set up on the play by Chris Moran and Vince Rocco. Cook went top shelf on Clarke, clanging his 75th career goal off the cross bar and past the freshman goalie.

After Clarke was pulled in favor of senior Bud Fisher (Peterborough, Ont.) to start the third period, Travis Anderson netted his second goal in as many nights at the 9:50 mark. Anderson's shot was from the right face-off circle and bounced off the inside of Fisher's right pad and into the goal. Anderson was assisted by Armando Scarlato on the play.

Quinnipiac returns to action next weekend when they host Robert Morris University on Friday, Jan. 23 and Saturday, Jan. 24 at the TD Banknorth Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. Both games are set for a 7 p.m. start.
