Men's Ice Hockey Loses To Brown, 3-2

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey team lost to Brown University, 3-2, in an ECAC Hockey match-up at the TD Banknorth Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. The game marked the final regular-season game of the 2008-09 season. The Bobcats drop to 15-14-3 overall and 8-9-3 in ECAC Hockey. Brown improves to 3-20-4 overall and 3-14-3 in league play.

Brown's Matt Vokes put the Bears out in front with his 10th goal of the season on the power play at the 15:38 mark of the first period. Jeremy Russell fed Aaron Volpatti, who put a shot on Quinnipiac senior goalie Bud Fisher (Peterborough, Ont.). The shot was blocked by Fisher and sent towards the right face-off circle, where Vokes was heading. The senior center poked it past Fisher to give Brown a 1-0 lead. Volpatti's assist was his sixth while Russell picked up his fifth of the season.

David Marshall (Buffalo, Minn.) scored at the 14:31 mark of the second period with the Bobcats on a five-on-three man advantage. Zach Hansen (White Bear Lake, Minn.) skated up the ice on the right flank into Brown's defensive zone before skating behind the Bears' net. Hansen then passed to the opposite face-off circle where Jean-Marc Beaudoin (St. Paul, Alb.) received the puck and skated through the Brown defense before finding Marshall at the point. Marshall handled the puck before unleash a shot that beat Browns freshman goalie Michael Clemente top shelf to even the score, 1-1.

Brown answered with less than three minutes to play in the period. Ryan Garbutt skated up the left side of the ice before finding Sean McMonagle to the right of Fisher. McMonagle then fed Mike Wolffe out on the point. Wolff's slap shot traveled through traffic before eluding the blocker of Fisher to give Brown a 2-1 lead heading into the final period. McMonagle scored early in the third period on a pass from Jordan Pietrus that was stopped by Fisher on his first attempt. Fisher failed to handle the puck and McMonagle poked it through to give Brown a 3-1 lead with just under 16 minutes to play in the game.

Bryan Leitch (Coquitlam, B.C.), the nation's leader in assists and points, scored his 10th goal of the season. Marshall started the play, skating up ice before dropping a pass off to Eric Lampe (Madison, Wisc.). Lampe then saw Leitch in the slot. Leitch's shot beat Clemente top shelf to pull the Bobcats within a goal.
