Men's Ice Hockey Assistant Bill Riga Coaches At USA Hockey Select-17 Player Development Camp

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Quinnipiac University men's assistant ice hockey coach Bill Riga recently served as a coach at the USA Hockey Select 17 Player Development Camp that was held from July 7-13 at the ESL Sports Centre in Rochester, N.Y. The goal of the camp is to serve as a try-out for the 2009 U.S. Under-18 Select Team that will compete at the 2009 Ivan Hlinka Memorial from Aug. 11-15, in Piestany, Slovakia.

"It's great to be part of USA Hockey and work with some of the best under-18 players in the country," Riga said. "The opportunity to work with great coaches from throughout the college and junior hockey ranks was an invaluable experience."

Riga served as co-head coach with University of Nebraska-Omaha's Nick Fohr. Riga's responsibilities included designing and implementing practice plans, coaching one of the eight teams in the festival in a round-robin format tournament. Riga also coordinated team-building activities as well as individual skill instruction.

Those players which Riga instructed individually that were named to the were include goalie Cody Campbell, defensemen Brandon Archibald and Scott Mayfield, as well as forwards Nick Bjugstad, Colten St. Clair, and Charlie Coyle.

Riga will be beginning his second year with the Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey staff. Last season, the Bobcats finished the year at 18-18-3 overall while hosting an ECAC Hockey Tournament First Round series for the fourth consecutive season. Riga is heavily involved in the Bobcats' recruiting efforts as well as the day-to-day operation of the team.
