Men's Ice Hockey Loses To Robert Morris, 8-5

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey team lost to Robert Morris University, 8-5, in a non-conference match-up at the RMU Island Sports Center. Quinnipiac suffers its first loss of the season to drop to 4-1-0 overall while Robert Morris improves to 2-4-0.

Brandon Wong (Victoria, B.C.) Scott Zurevinski (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) and Greg Holt (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) each scored once and while assisting on another goal. Zach Davies (Smithers, B.C) and Eric Lampe (Madison, Wisc.) also scored for Quinnipiac. For Robert Morris, Nathan Longpre scored four goals and assisted on another in the win by Eric Levine had 58 saves in the game, including 32 in the third period. Quinnipiac out-shot the Bobcats 63-33 for the game.

Davies scored his first career goal on the Bobcats' power play early in the first period. Robert Morris initially stopped a Quinnipiac rush, after Greg Holt (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) connected with Yuri Bouharevich (Montreal, Que.) in front of the goal. After RMU goalie Eric Levine stopped Bouharevich's shot, the pick drifted to the blue line where Davies was waiting to unleash a blast that beat Levine give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead.

Robert Morris responded at the 12:48 makr when Zach Hervato passed to Chris Kushneriuk in the Colonials' zone. Kushneriuk then sent the puck up-ice to Nathan Longpre, who took off through the neutral zone. Kushneriuk weaved through the Quinnipiac defense and flipped a shot over the left shoulder of Bobcats' goalie Dan Clarke (Belleville, Ont.) to tie the game. Longpre gave Robert Morris its first lead of the series at the 13:24 mark on the power play. It was Kushneriuk again who handled the puck by the Quinnipiac goal line and passed to Longpre at the point. Longpre let-loose a slap shot through traffic that rattled home to give the Colonials a 2-1 lead.

A costly turnover by Robert Morris in their own zone resulted in a Bobcat goal. The Colonials broke up the Quinnipiac fore check, but Zurevinski was able to steal the puck on the ensuing clear and blasted a shot past Levine for his fourth goal of the year to tie the game.

The second period was all Robert Morris as they scored three times to take a 5-2 lead, including a pair of goals by Longpre to give him four through two periods. Trevor Lewis got the scoring started on his second goal of the season just 53 seconds into the period. Lewis was set up on the play by Kushneriuk and Denny Urban. Longpre took over Longpre scored the Colonials first of the period before Trevor Lewis scored to give Robert Morris a two goal lead. Longpre then scored again to push RMU's lead to three goals.

Quinnipiac bounced back in the third period, scoring three power play goals to cut into the Robert Morris lead. Brandon Wong (Victoria, B.C.) set up Eric Lampe (Madison, Wisc.) for the senior's fourth goal of the season, while Wong converted on his sixth assist of the year. Davies dropped the puck deep into the Robert Morris zone, wrapping it around the Colonials goal. Wong picked up it behind the net and slipped it out in front to Lampe for the goal.

Greg Holt (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) scored for the second time in as many nights when Zurevinski dug the puck out of the corner and passed out to Holt at the point. Wong scored less than two minutes later on a play set up by freshmen D'Arch Oakes (Shanty Bay, Ont.) and Jeremy Langlois (Tempe, Ariz.).

J.C. Velasquez scored twice in the third period for Robert Morris.

Quinnipiac returns to action next weekend when it hosts Clarkson University on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. and St. Lawrence University on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 4 p.m at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn.
